Take refuge in the dark passageway.

As quickly and quietly as you can, you duck into the dark opening and inch out of the torch's light. The opening is so narrow you have to practically crawl on your hands and knees through the water to get deeper inside. Even with the tight squeeze you manage to get decently far inside the pipe. Hopefully this is enough to evade the worm's notice...

You slowly roll over onto your back, half-sitting in the pipe and watching the tunnel outside. Moments slowly creep by, and you start to wonder if the worm even came this way in the first place - but soon your patience is rewarded. The creature slowly emerges from the water outside the tunnel, twisting its head around and scanning the area. You hold your breath and stare at the worm, only now seeing its bulbous body and glistening skin up close. Goo spurts out from its gaping maw softly, then it quietly dives back into the water.

A few more moments pass as you start to breathe easy again. The disgusting creature seems to be gone, and the sooner you get back to the gate the sooner you can open it. But just as you're about to shimmy back out of the hole, the worm's head bursts out from the water between your legs and onto your stomach!
