Chapter 7
by Koriandr
Who was it?
Superman
The white light from the doorway shone down the stairs to the bat cave, before being covered by a red glow as a familiar cape blew around the corner, then a glimpse of blue. Superman had arrived.
"Bruce, you really should work on the draft on the way in here."
He said walking down the stairs before noticing the pair of green women standing in the bat cave.
He stopped dead in his tracks, before taking in the sight of the two, one appearing more timid in her expression and posture despite her distinct Brainiac-based appearance and costume, and the other looking slightly more collected and menacing given her larger build, but also dressed in a bat suit of all things.
Despite their appearances strongly evoking his most prolific space-based foe, it didn't take Clark long to realize who the two were.
"Bruce..? Tim..?"
"Glad you could make it... hmmm Clark. Would've thought you'd get here faster though."
Bruce replied, trying to clear her throat partway through, still adjusting to her feminine tone.
"Sorry, the Parasite decided to make a scene. What happened?"
Bruce was about to attempt to explain, before Tim belted out.
"It was Brainiac! I found his ship, pod, whatever it was, and it turned me into this! He said something about him valuing my intellect or something, then Batman crashed through the roof and..."
She was talking at a mile a minute, causing Clark to approach slightly before raising a gentle hand out.
"Tim, I know you've been through a lot, I can't begin to imagine what its like, but you need to breathe. Slow down, take your time. I'm not expecting you to have noticed everything, but please try and tell me every detail you can remember."
The calmness of his tone was incredibly comforting, causing Tim to pause momentarily before continuing after taking a long breath.
"Brainiac said something about wanting my complete obedience and loyalty, I guess he thought he had me after changing me, then Batman saved me and blew the place up. We got back to the bat cave and then... I don't remember what happened after that. I blanked out or something and next thing I know Bruce is turning into... that!"
Tim said in a very concerned tone whilst gesturing to Bruce's new form.
"It was after he hugged me, something made contact with my skin and must have administered some form of nanites. I'd advise staying away from us, Clark."
"Not a problem. It's unlikely Brainiac has developed anything that can penetrate my skin yet, but I won't take the risk."
He then eyed the two with a slight intensity.
"Hmm. My x-ray vision isn't picking up anything. Brainiac probably developed artificial skin that my vision can't penetrate, makes sense seeing as I've used that to my advantage against him so many times."
"How should we proceed?"
Bruce asked sternly.
"Shut down every computer and piece of technology you can in here, all without making contact with any of it."
"Come on Superman, Bruce's tech is advanced but he still has some analogue stuff aroun-"
"Computer, initiate shutdown code alpha zeta nine seven five."
Bruce interrupted Tim. There was a brief moment of silence..
"Voice scan not recognized."
"I've got this."
Superman smiled, clearing his throat as he raised a hand to it, repeated Bruce's command in an identical tone to Bruce's former male voice.
"I forgot you could do that."
"Well I've had to fill in for you once or twice, sounding the part is just as important as looking it."
Superman replied with a smile, before realizing his 'looking the part' comment was less than ideal given the situation.
"So now what?"
Tim asked.
"I'm taking you to the fortress, J'onn's got a lock on us so he'll beam us straight there, would've brought a ride but can't risk any Brainiac tech making contact with it. I've radioed any available magic users to make their way there too as soon as possible, if Kryptonian tech isn't enough they're our best shot. J'onn? We're ready."
With that a bright shimmer overtook the three of them, and in moments the cave was left empty, the last of the lights shutting off.
Seconds later the three materialized in a very different location, the dark jagged stone walls of the bat cave were replaced by the bright smooth ice structures of the Fortress of Solitude. Superman led the two down a long wide corridor, snow crunching under their feet, although in their new forms neither Bruce nor Tim could register the cold. They were about to enter a more technologically advanced looking area before Superman turned.
"I'll see what the main computer can tell us first. I'm sorry, but I'll need to contain the two of you momentarily. Again this may be the only place that can help you and I've got plenty of Brainiac defenses, but I can't be certain it's enough until I know exactly what he's done to you."
"You need the computer to help us but can't let us near the computer, talk about a double edged sword huh?"
Tim joked, clearly doing her best to cope.
"Go, we'll be fine."
Bruce said and with that a translucent energy bubble formed around the two, sealing them off. Superman walked on and they found themselves able to follow, only the bubble remained around them.
A series of small machines of varying shapes and sizes began floating down around them, some were almost cute looking, others slightly more sinister as they seemed to be examining, recording, and running scans on the pair.
"So... how are you doing?"
Tim asked Bruce.
"Not thinking about it."
Bruce replied.
"I'm so sorry again Bruce, I didn't-"
"Don't bother Tim, Brainiac is the one responsible for all of this, you did nothing wrong, you had no control over your actions."
"Is it just me, or is it weird that I know how this sounds, but being like this doesn't feel completely awful. I don't know what this body's capable of, but I know it's powerful, I'm not freezing my butt off here."
"I agree."
"You do?"
"Of course. These forms are perfect."
"What?"
Tim was taken aback not just by Bruce's response, but even her tone of voice and the way she carried herself as she walked changed into a more alluring presence.
Bruce turned to look at Tim, her face cold in expression and her eyes blackened out. Tim backed up into the wall of the forcefield fearfully, but Bruce just kept staring.
"We live to serve Brainiac. All will serve Brainiac."
As Bruce spoke, her voice changed, gaining a more unsettling robotic base to her still feminine tone, the traces of a sinister smile crossing her face.
"Bruce, please! Whatever's got into you, fight it!"
"Your efforts are useless. You know what must be done. Too long has this world stood against the might of Brainiac. It must be reshaped in his image, a true world of Brainiac."
Tim tried desperately to call Superman, but he didn't respond, continuing to look away as they walked further and further into darkness.
"He cannot help you."
Bruce said, Tim turning to see she now wore the same Brainiac style outfit as herself.
"This is all in your mind... human. That is all that remains of what you once were, now embrace what you are, what you were meant to be!"
"No!"
"You turned your mentor into this, into another servant of Brainiac, how could you still live the lie that you are human when you did this to one you claimed to care for? The fear, the pain, all that comes with these things you call emotions, Brainiac sees how it hurts you. You can be free of it, free of it all, you can make the whole world free of it. All that matters is Brainiac."
Bruce was now leaning in close, her arm resting against the forcefield as she peered down at Tim, who'd sunk down partially, head turned away, face scrunched with her eyes shut, teeth gritted and hands over her ears.
Bruce's words swirled in her mind, louder and louder as they became more and more distorted but only building in their overpowering presence.
All Tim could do was scream in an attempt to drown out the voice.
"Tim..? Tim!"
Tim snapped back to reality, seeing they'd made it to the main computer. Bruce had a hand on her shoulder and a look of concern on her face.
"You blacked out again!"
"It-it must be Brainiac, or his programming, I don't know! He's in my head, I don't know how much longer I can hold him off!"
Tim leaned forward, hands pressed against her head, voice filled with pain and desperation.
"Just hold on Tim, the computer is running the final calculations and we've got more people on the way, Just let us help you."
Superman gestured to the former boy wonder, his tone calm and even.
"No... no! I'm a danger to everyone! I can't control myself! I don't know what to do, I can't even tell what's real anymore!"
What did Tim do?
