Study Session Shadows

Chapter 25 by sexycooldude

Alex knocked on Mia’s door a little after seven. His backpack felt heavier than usual. He had his psych notes and the textbook she had asked about last week. He had almost texted her twice during the day to cancel. Each time he stopped himself. Canceling would look weird. It would look like he was still stuck on what happened with the test.

She opened the door wearing the same soft gray sweatpants she always wore when they studied. Her hair was up in a messy bun. She smiled when she saw him. Small and warm. She stepped back so he could come in.

“Hey,” she said.

Her hand brushed his arm as he passed. Just a light touch. Like she was making sure he was really there.

Alex set his bag on the floor by the couch. The apartment smelled like her usual vanilla candle and the coffee she must have made earlier. Books were already spread across the coffee table. Her notebook was open. Highlighters lined up in a row.

He sat down on the floor like he always did when they studied here. She sat next to him. Closer than she used to. Their knees touched under the table.

She did not say anything about the other night. She just opened her textbook and flipped to the chapter they were on.

“I’m stuck on the part regarding Jung,” she said. She leaned over his shoulder to point at the page. Her hair fell forward and brushed his cheek. “Can you explain it again?”

Alex tried to focus on the words. He told her about the experiment with the boring task and the money. His voice sounded normal. His head was not.

She stayed leaned against him while he talked. Her shoulder pressed into his arm. She nodded at the right times. When he finished she wrote something in her notebook. Her free hand rested on his knee for a second. Just resting there. Warm through his jeans.

He kept going over the same thoughts he had been having since yesterday.

Last night at dinner she had been normal. Tonight she was touching him more. Sitting closer. Was it because of the scare? Was she still scared and this was how she dealt with it? Or was she trying to act like everything was fine so he would not worry?

What if it was just leftover from the hug on the bathroom floor? What if in a few days she would go back to sitting across from him instead of right against him?

He hated how much he wanted her to keep sitting this close.

They worked in quiet for a while. Pages turned. Pens scratched. The only other sound was the low hum of her fridge in the kitchen. Alex tried to take notes but kept reading the same paragraph three times.

Mia shifted. She stretched her legs out under the table. Her foot bumped his. She did not move it away. She left it there, ankle against ankle.

He felt it all the way up his leg.

His body reacted the way it always did when she was this close. Warmth low in his stomach. A pull he tried to ignore. He felt guilty for it. Again. After everything that happened. After how scared she had been. Here he was getting hard just because her foot touched his while they studied.

He shifted and pulled his notebook higher on his lap. She did not seem to notice.

After an hour she closed her book. She rubbed her eyes.

“Break?” she asked.

He nodded.

She got up and went to the kitchen. He heard the kettle click on. When she came back she had two mugs. She set one in front of him without asking what he wanted. She remembered. Chamomile. No honey.

She sat back down next to him. Closer this time. Her leg pressed against his from hip to knee. She leaned back against the couch and sipped her tea. Her free hand rested on his thigh. Not moving. Just there.

Alex stared at his mug. The steam curled up and disappeared.

She was being affectionate. More than usual. He could feel it in every small touch. The way she leaned into him when she pointed at something. The way her hand stayed on his leg now. The way she had kissed him at the door last night like she wanted him to stay longer.

But his head would not let it be simple.

What if this was only because of the test? What if she was still processing the scare and this was her way of feeling safe? What if in a week or two the closeness would fade and she would realize she did not actually want him around this much?

What if he was reading too much into everything and she was just being normal and he was the one making it weird?

He took a sip of tea. It was too hot. It burned his tongue a little.

Mia set her mug down. She turned toward him. Her hand stayed on his thigh.

“You okay?” she asked.

The question was quiet. She looked at him like she actually wanted the answer.

Alex nodded. He tried to smile. It felt tight.

“Yeah. Just tired from work.”

She nodded. She did not push. She just stayed close. Her thumb moved once across his leg. Slow. Like she was thinking.

They sat like that for a few minutes. Not talking. Just drinking tea and sitting with their legs touching. Alex could smell her shampoo again. The same one from this morning. It made his chest feel full and scared at the same time.

He wanted to kiss her. Not the soft ones from last night or this morning. Something deeper. Something that would make the doubt go quiet for a while. But he did not move. He was afraid she would pull back. Afraid she would think he only wanted that after what happened.

Mia finished her tea. She set the mug on the table and leaned forward to look at her notes again. Her hand left his leg. He missed it right away.

They went back to studying. The quiet came back. Pages turned slower now. Alex kept losing his place. Every time she reached for a highlighter her arm brushed his. Every time she asked a question she turned her body toward him.

He kept replaying the bathroom floor in his head. The way she had cried against his chest. The way she had said “We’re okay” like she needed him to believe it too. Then he replayed the normal dinner from last night. The easy conversation. The way she had walked him to the door and kissed him like it was just another night.

Now tonight she was touching him more. Sitting closer. Acting like she wanted him here.

He did not know which version of her was real.

Around ten she closed her book for good. She stretched her arms over her head. Her shirt lifted a little. He looked away fast.

“I think I’m done for tonight,” she said.

Alex nodded. He started packing his things. Slower than he needed to. He did not know if he should offer to leave or wait for her to say something.

Mia watched him put his notebook in his bag. She reached out and touched his wrist. Light. Just her fingers against his skin.

“You can stay if you want,” she said.

The words were simple. No pressure. Just an offer.

Alex looked at her. She was watching him with that same small smile from earlier. Her eyes were tired but warm. She had not moved her hand from his wrist.

He wanted to stay. He wanted to lie on her bed with her like they had last night and feel her breathing against him. He wanted the doubt to shut up for a few hours.

But he also wanted to go home and think. To figure out if all of this was real or if it was just the scare making everything feel bigger for a little while.

He stayed.

They moved to her bed without talking much. She changed into sleep shorts and the same t-shirt from this morning. He kept his jeans on and took off his shirt. It felt too intimate to get fully undressed right now.

They got under the covers. She turned off the lamp. The room went dark except for the street light through the blinds.

Mia moved close like she had last night. Her head on his chest. Her arm across his stomach. Her leg tangled with his.

Alex put his arm around her. His hand settled on her back. He could feel her breathing. Slow and steady.

She was quiet for a long time. He thought she had fallen asleep.

Then she spoke. Her voice was soft against his skin.

“I’m glad you came over tonight.”

Alex swallowed. His throat felt tight.

“Me too,” he said.

She pressed a small kiss to his chest. Just above his heart. Then she settled again.

He lay there staring at the ceiling. The same shadows from last night were back. The same lines from the blinds.

His body was aware of every place they touched. Her leg over his. Her hand on his stomach. The warmth of her breath. He felt himself getting hard again. Slow and insistent. He hated it. Hated that his body could want this right now. After everything. After the fear and the test and the way she had looked at him in the bathroom.

He shifted a little. Tried to create space without waking her. She made a small sound and moved closer instead.

Alex closed his eyes.

He told himself this was good. She wanted him here. She had asked him to stay. She was touching him like she meant it.

But the doubt was still there. Quieter than last night but still sitting in his chest.

What if this closeness was only temporary? What if she woke up tomorrow and realized the scare had made her cling to him and now she did not need to anymore?

What if he was already losing the thing he had barely started to believe he could keep?

He held her a little tighter. She did not wake up. She just breathed against him like she trusted him to be there.

Alex stayed awake long after she fell asleep. His mind kept turning the same thoughts over and over. The test. The normal dinner. The way she sat close tonight. The way she kissed his chest before she slept.

He did not know what any of it meant.

He only knew that the doubt never really left. It just waited until the lights were off and everything got quiet again.
