Starting a New Job
Diana met Jack in the lobby the next morning carrying two coffees.
"I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty to get you one to celebrate your first day," she said smiling brightly at him. They're fingers brushed as she handed it to him. She wore a tight fitting blue sweater over tan wide legged trousers accentuated by two golden hoop earrings and a pendant necklace.
He took a sip of coffee. The heat rolled gently over his tongue perfectly balanced between the bitterness of the bean, the richness of the milk and a touch of sweetness mixed with something he couldn't place.
"Damn," he muttered, that's really good.
"Our chef Ferdinand is very good," she said with a smile. She was beaming.
If Jack didn't know any better he would say that she seemed... Eager?
He had to be reading into things.
"You have a chef?" He asked Diana as she held the door for him.
"We work very hard here Jackson, I try to make it a pleasant experience for my workers," she said.
They were in a well appointed, rowhouse off Moulton and Bryne a few blocks from the capital building, a plaque out front reading "Themyscirian Embassy." The front desk was manned by a fit young Latina woman in her mid 30s, her hair was in a tight bun and she wore an orange turtleneck
"You'll need to sign in while we finish your paperwork and get you a badge," Diana said, handing him a clipboard. "I hope you do not mind," she added apologetically.
"No, of course not," he said, signing and dating a row on the visitor form. Diana looked relieved to hear him say it.
"Jackson Johnson, Jackson this is Alana; our head of security," Diana said, motioning to the Latina woman.
"Nice to meet you Alana, please call me Jack," Jack said, holding out his hand for Alana.
"You too Jack," Alana said, taking his hand. She had a strong grip. Jack halfheartedly wondered what kind of woman is put in charge of security for Wonder Woman?
"So, not that I'm not grateful to have a job Diana," Jack said, shaking out his hand his hand after Alana released it. "But what exactly am I going to be doing?"
“I’ve asked Barbara to turn over a list of the items destroyed in the Giganta attack, along with the debris recovered afterward,” Diana explained as they stopped outside a room on the third floor. She turned toward him, one hand still resting lightly on the doorframe.
“I’d like you to see what can be reconstructed and assess any likely connection to the medallion you said Circe took.”
Then she hesitated.
The confidence in her posture faltered just slightly, and an oddly anxious look crossed her face.
“Though… if you would rather do something else?” she asked quickly.
"No," he said quickly. "That sounds great." He smiled, rubbing the back of his head bashfully. "I'm just happy to be using my degree," he joked.
She blushed, beaming. She actually blushed.
It was insane. Jack felt like he was going insane. She looked him in the eyes with a kind of awe and hunger and he felt something stir in himself.
He had to be imagining this. This was Wonder Woman for God's sake.
Suddenly they were interrupted by the banging of footsteps in the hallway.
A larger blonde woman wearing fashionable pink dress ran down the hallway, phone held in one hand.
"Diana! Some crazy guy is attacking a woman's shelter out in Georgetown," the woman yelled, thrusting her phone towards Diana.
On screen a naked man with the head of a doberman snarled at a line of police officers. Bullets tore into its flesh, tearing bloody holes into the creature only for the wounds to knight up instantly.
Blood dripping down it's maw it threw back it's head and howled "STELLLLLAAAAA" before lunging.
The camera jerked. Image falling to the sky as screams erupted in the background.
"Jesus," Jack whispered horrified.
Diana looked towards him, concern flashing on her face. "Jackson, is it alright if I--?" She began.
"Go, go!" Jack blurted out, baffled why she was even asking. "Do your Wonder Woman thing, I'll be fine."
Diana nodded once before looking towards the blonde woman.
"Etta, please make sure Jackson has everything head needs while I am away."
There was a sharp blast of wind, a blur and she was gone.
Jack stared at the empty space where she'd been standing and ran his hand through his hair.
"Christ," he muttered to himself.
"You'll get used to it baby," the blonde woman (Etta apparently) said with a sympathetic smile.
"You think those people will be alright?" Jack started to ask, motioning to Etta's phone.
"Of course they will be babe," Etta said confidently. "Trust me, Diana is like, the pro at this."
"Okay," he said halfheartedly.
"Why don't you let me show you your room?" Etta offered. "Keep your mind off things."
"Yeah," Jack agreed. "That'd be good."
Etta went to turn her phone off. The last message from it a bystander calling out.
"It's Wonder Woman."
