What's next?
Small talk
"You runnin' away together or something?"
"No, ma’am," Jack said politely. "We're just looking for adventure. Wanted to see the country."
"Well, you be careful out there. Lotta unsavory folk on the road." Shee gave them a smile.
"We'll keep that in mind," said Alice sweetly. "Very kind of you to give us a lift."
“Well, I’m Linda.”
“I’m Alice and this is Jack. Very pleased to meet you.”
“Do you have some gas money?”
“We do but we’re trying to save it,” Jack says.
Alice says, “You want to smoke a jay?” Jack smiles at her.
Linda laughs and says, “Ah, you’ve heard of ‘Gas, Grass, or Ass’, I see. I hitched from Minnesota to Texas a few years ago. My pussy paid most of the way. I’ll take a couple puffs and you can save the rest. I’m kind of a lightweight now when it comes to reefer anyway.”
Alice says, “Sure.” She takes out a thin joint, lights it, takes a puff, and hands it to Linda. She takes a puff and hands it back. Jack takes a puff and hands it back to Linda. She takes another puff, coughing a bit. Alice takes the joint and stubs it out. It goes back into her coat. “We just had some so we don’t need much.”
“Oh, yeah! Now we’re cooking with gas!” Linda says excitedly.

The Summer of Love
Hitchhiking on Route 66 in 1967
The year is 1967, the Summer of Love. This is the era of Rock & Roll. The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, and Procol Harum are the top bands. Johnson is president. The Vietnam War is in full swing. Anti-war marches alternate with civil rights protests, often led by Martin Luther King. Gas prices are 33 cents a gallon. You are eighteen years old, you live in Springfield, Illinois, the state capital, and you're a senior in Springfield High School. You watched the television coverage of the Human Be-In in San Francisco in January. When Timothy Leary said, "Turn on, tune in, and drop out," his words resonated with you, and you decided to head to California over Spring Break.
