What's next?
She's right
It’s getting late, and Nadia’s right. Sleeping in a new place is never easy, and a new place that sucks? It’s going to be rough. You also have to share a bathroom and cope with the fact that the old water heater is three times as big as the one in your house, yet ten times less efficient. There are three bathrooms on the second floor, and you need to prioritize getting the other two into working order.
You cross the walkway over the foyer, where Rey is just coming back in from walking Delilah to her car. You pause and lean on the railing, holding your mug that contains your toothbrush. “Why not crash at her place? She’s got AC.”
“Can’t you just tell me to fuck off like a normal person?” she shoots back.
“No, I mean, at Delilah’s you’re in line behind two people for the bathroom. Here, there’s a thousand of us.”
“I’m not behind you,” Rey says, dashing up the steps. She is terrifyingly fast.
“No!” You rush to cut her off, only for the bathroom door to open. Your mother steps out, wrapped in a towel and smelling like shampoo. She smiles at the sight of you two. Her hair is still wet, sticking to her skin.
“Oh my gosh,” she says. “That takes me back.”
Rey frowns. “You’re looking tight. Mom, are you doing a revenge diet?”
Tracy gasps. “What?”
You nudge Rey. “Don’t be weird.”
“I didn’t say it was a bad thing.”
Tracy’s already walking away. You seize your chance and dart into the bathroom, slamming the door in Rey’s face.
