Sarah Essen had worked her way up Gotham PD as a rookie officer.

When Sarah became a detective, she had an affair with Detective James Gordon. She had admired Gordon for a long time and it just happened in a moment of passion.

However Gordon was married at the time, so they quickly broke off the affair and tried to remain professional.

After some time, James Gordon became Police Commissioner for Gotham City. His marriage collapsed due to work and he divorced his wife. After an appropriate time had passed, Sarah and James rekindled their romance and started dating. They eventually married each other down the line.

After a few more years, James Gordon decided to go into politics to change Gotham for the better. He successfully got himself elected as Mayor of Gotham City.

Sarah quickly took over and became Commissioner of Gotham PD. Like Gordon, she maintained a good working relationship with Gotham City’s Bats, often feeding them intel and requesting for their help to solve tough cases.

However, over the past years, Batman has been more and more involved in Justice League matters, which spared him little time for his homeground. Luckily however, the Batfamily was always around to fill in for Batman.
