Rules We Break 11 - A New Dress
Sage closed her car door and heard the locks click with a beep. Amy stepped in front of her as the two made their way to the front door, holding several bags and talking to her mother on the phone.
“No, Mom, I told you, we are a sugar-free household. Yes, I know they want candy. That’s why it’s YOUR job to help them see that fruit is just as good.”
Sage smiled as she trailed behind Amy through the front door.
“Mom, I’ve got to go. Don’t give them sugar! Ok, love you, bye.” Amy snapped her phone shut and spread her arms wide when she saw Ryan in the living room.
“She’s still trying to fatten em up, huh?” Ryan said.
“I swear she’s as stubborn as I am,” Amy replied. As they embraced one another, Sage dropped her bags at the door and walked between the living room and office. When she didn't find Jeremy, she returned Amy and Ryan, who still held one another.
"Hey Ryan?" Sage said.
"Yeeees?" Ryan said.
"Have you seen Jeremy?"
"Oh yeah, he's still out in the garage. He's been practicing since we got back."
"Thanks, you two can go back to being love birds now," Sage said. Amy looked at Ryan knowingly. Then, they both stared at Sage with a set of sly grins.
"That's rich considering all the noise you two made last night,” Amy said.
Sage blushed and promptly turned to the garage as they began to laugh.
There, she was greeted by an old melody mixed with new notes, and Jeremy resting on his old folding chair. It was the same one he’d used when practicing in his studio apartment. He sat like he always did. Slightly hunched over as he wrote in his notepad, humming a melody he hadn't fully found yet. The garage door was open, and the wide prairie landscape created a perfect divide with the blue sky above.
"It's sounding great," she said sweetly. Jeremy jumped and turned, laughing softly when he saw Sage.
"I'm going to have to start facing my chair to that door. Ryan snuck up on me also."
Sage laughed gently as she shut the door behind her and leaned against it.
"Is that a new song you’re working on?" she said.
"Yeah, trying out some new stuff for the great comeback.” Jeremy continued to jot down notes as he spoke.
Sage smiled and slowly walked towards him. "The great comeback."
"I know, so dramatic, right?"
"No, I like it."
He glanced up from his guitar and went still when he caught Sage’s eyes. His familiar, bright smile melted Sage, as always.
"How was shopping?" he asked.
Sage’s smile faltered only slightly.
"Good, it was good. Revisited a lot of old memories."
"That's nice! I’m sure Amy was happy about that."
Sage’s smile dimmed completely.
"Yeah… We checked out that new place off West Street, though!"
"Oh, the new bookstore?! How was it?"
"It was good! Nice to see something new," Sage said.
Jeremy smiled as he strummed absently.
"Finally switching up the routine, huh?"
Sage breathed through her nose and pushed his shoulder.
“Stop…” she said.
“I’m just teasing.”
“I know…” Sage said bashfully.
Jeremy paused for a moment, tapping his fingers along the body of his guitar. He glanced at the door leading into the home, and when he saw they were alone, he began to speak.
"So… David said you two were talking about meeting later today?"
The transition came so suddenly that she found herself speechless.
"Hm?" she said, eyebrows raised in surprise.
"David said you two were talking about visiting later today?" Jeremy repeated, his tone growing slightly suspicious.
"Uhhh… HE suggested it this morning, yeah."
Jeremy laughed softly while plucking a few notes.
"I figured as much. Apparently, he got you a new dress. He was so excited to give it to you," Jeremy said jokingly.
Sage scoffed. "Oh my god, don't even get me started. He literally lumbered over to our house when Amy and I were in the kitchen this morning. I had to go out and stop him before he reached our backyard."
Jeremy threw his head back and laughed.
"Jesus, he’s a real piece of work. He went golfing with us today, by the way."
"What?! Why?!"
"Because Ryan invited him!"
“He’s too friendly for his own good…”
A familiar, youthful energy danced on their voices. Like it used to after shows. In venues. Late at night on the road. Driving from state to state, trying not to fall asleep as they crammed five performances into one weekend.
Sage found herself missing it.
“Tell me about it. Anyways, Ryan now thinks that David and I are best buds…” Jeremy said.
"I’m sure David loves that. I think his stunt might have made Amy suspicious…" Sage added.
"Wait, you think?" Jeremy asked. Glancing back at the door leading into the house.
"Yeah, that's why I'm nervous to go over there. Plus, you know, the rules." She spoke of the rules as if she were ashamed of them.
"And we absolutely need to have our rules," Jeremy said jokingly as he strummed through a few soft chords.
He, of course, meant nothing by it. It was a passive comment, not even pointed at her. More of a joke about the situation than about her character. And yet, it was the exact mirror Sage didn’t want to see herself in.
"No we don't," she said quickly. Jeremy’s chords stopped abruptly as he looked up at her in surprise.
"Wait, so you want to go over there?" he asked.
Sage bit her lip while tapping her foot nervously.
“I mean… maybe?” Sage eyed Jeremy for a moment, and when she spotted his all too familiar playful expression, she continued. “You want me to, don’t you?”
“Well… I may or may not have sort of… bet on it.”
Sage's eyes widened.
“I’m sorry?” Now it was Sage's turn to be playful.
“Well, David was pissing me off…”
“As he does.”
Jeremy laughed.
“As he does,” he agreed. “Anyway, he started talking on the green, and we sort of bet that if I could win a putt… You wouldn’t come over tonight.”
“So… did you win?”
Jeremy cleared his throat and plucked a few notes absently. Sage leaned forward eagerly.
“Did you win?” she whispered teasingly.
“I didn’t,” Jeremy replied bashfully.
“Oh my god,” Sage crouched down and met Jeremy’s eyes. “Jeremy… why would you bet on golf? You suck at golf.”
Jeremy couldn’t contain his smile. “I thought I could win!”
Sage covered her face as she shook her head.
“Well, that settles it then. Guess I HAVE to go over there now.”
Another burst of laughter rang out between them as Jeremy began to strum once more.
“I told him you wouldn’t like being told what to do,” he said.
“Uh huh, and what did he say?”
Jeremy shrugged. “Something about knowing what you really want.”
Sage’s heart leapt as she scoffed. “What a pig.”
“Total pig.”
There was a pause, a graceful silent pause, as if it were necessary before Sage asked the question.
“So should I go?” she said.
“That’s up to you,” Jeremy said coolly, putting his guitar away. “But if you did. We’d need an alibi."
"Or, I could just go over late…" Sage said. Jeremy looked up in interest.
"So the plan is for you to sneak out of the house like we’re in high school?"
Sage leaned forward and placed her hands on Jeremy's thighs.
"Why not?" she said.
Jeremy let out a low whistle.
"I love it when you get wild," he said.
Sage squeezed his legs.
"I never said I was going to let him do anything," she said.
"Never said you had to."
Sage bit her lip.
"We'll see what happens. Are you going to watch like last night?"
Jeremy shook his head. "Too risky, especially if you think Amy is suspicious. David said he'd film it."
Sage pouted.
"But I want you to watch," she said softly. She smiled as Jeremy slid his hands around her arms and pulled her into his lap.
"I do too, but I'm not running from window to window again. Do you have any idea how close Amy was to seeing you two?"
Sage slowly traced a circle along his chest.
"What if you sneak over with me?" she asked.
"I thought about it, but I still think it’s kind of a risk.”
Sage leaned down and touched his nose with hers.
“I thought you were the wild one,” she whispered.
Jeremy laughed softly and planted a kiss on her lips.
“I think it'd be smartest if I just stayed up and kept an ear out. That way, I can text you if I do hear anything. Plus…”
Sage raised an eyebrow. “Yes?”
“Well… if I’m being honest. The video thing does sound kind of hot.”
Sage was surprised to hear that, but was even more surprised at how excited she became at the prospect of being fully alone with David.
"Hmmmm, well ok… I guess." Sage slid her finger up Jeremy’s neck to his chin. She pinched it and looked into his eyes. "I'm definitely going to give David a hard time about it, though."
"Oh, please do."
"Then we're doing this?" she said.
Jeremy gave her thigh a firm squeeze. "I think we are."
–
Sneaking out of her own house was a strange feeling. She and Jeremy waited until it was late in the night, and when Amy and Ryan fell silent in their guest bedroom, they comically peeked their heads out of their door to make sure the coast was clear. Then, with a final kiss goodbye, Sage scurried down the stairs and out the back sliding door.
In all her excitement, she had forgotten to grab a pair of shoes. The grass was cool and dewy on her bare feet.
She found David's back door unlatched, and when she entered, he was already on the couch. Shirt off with a whisky in his hand. The living room was illuminated by only a few old lamps, and didn't look any less dingy than the last time she’d visited.
“Sage,” David said absently.
“David,” Sage replied.
They stared at one another for a moment.
“Please, come in,” he said sarcastically. Sage scoffed as she stepped in and slid the door closed behind her.
"I thought you’d mentioned something about cleaning this place up?" Sage said.
David's brow furrowed. "Uh… I did?"
Sage looked around the place. Noting the dusty cobwebs in the corners, stains on the yellowed tablecloth, and questionable spots on the living room carpet.
"Uh huh…" She stepped closer, and David stood up. It appeared as though he had decided to pick the smallest shorts he owned.
It showed off the thickness of his thighs.
The bulk of his build.
The broadness of his chest.
It held Sage’s eyes longer than she would have liked.
"Would you mind putting a shirt on?" she said.
David slowly took a sip from his drink.
"What's the point of that if I'm just going to take it off again?"
Sage smiled, eager to play their game.
"I'm just here for my dress," she said.
David kept the cup to his lips before scoffing and turning from her. He walked slowly over to the office, stepping into the dark as Sage's eyes scanned the remainder of his house. The trash, at least, seemed to be emptied. And he had also put away his dishes. Before Sage could inspect further, David returned with a bag hanging from his index finger and offered it to her.
"Here," he said.
Sage stepped forward and carefully took it.
"Thank you," she replied. David stood close, and she looked at him expectantly. Wondering if he would try to make a move. Instead, he slowly took a drink and nodded to the bag.
"You going to try it on?" he asked.
"Maybe later," Sage said.
"I think you should try it on now."
"Oh? Do you?"
David rolled his eyes and downed the rest of his drink.
"At least look at the damn thing, I need to know if I should return it or not."
There it was, that little fleck of kindness. As David walked to the kitchen to pour himself another drink, Sage moved to the center of the living room and placed the bag on David's loveseat. She then carefully put her hand into it, as if it were a trap waiting for her touch. Then, carefully, she pulled out a surprisingly tasteful black party dress and could tell by its seam that it would fit her nicely.
Clearly, he’d had practice with this.
"So what do you think?" he asked, still standing in the kitchen as he sipped on his freshly poured whisky. Sage's eyes turned to him. Not wanting to feed into his ego, she downplayed her surprise.
"It's not bad," she said.
"Will it fit?"
"I guess we'll see."
David smirked.
"You should try it on.”
Sage stared blankly.
“Just to be safe,” David added.
Sage rolled her eyes, fighting against primal urges.
She wanted to.
She wanted David to see her in it.
She wanted to see him look at her with that familiar gaze of hunger. To long for something he couldn’t have. To give her his endless devotion of desire.
Sage glanced at his office.
"Go in there, I will change," she said flatly.
Without a word, David turned and made his way to the small room, closing the door behind himself. Sage then quickly slipped out of the hoodie and sweats she'd walked over in, keeping her eye on the door to see if David would peek.
To her disappointment, he didn't.
She stepped into the dress and pulled it over her curves. Placing its thin straps on her shoulders as she adjusted her giant breasts inside the soft fabric. As usual, her cleavage plunged out. And she was unable to zip it in the back.
"Ok, you can come out now," she said. David stepped out instantly.
And stood frozen in place at the sight of her.
"Holy shit," he said. Sage barely managed to contain a smile as she turned from him.
“Zip me,” she said.
She heard David walk towards her. Her skin prickled as his thick fingers found the zipper and pulled it up. When she felt his fingers let go, Sage turned.
She was pleased to see him still stunned in silence.
"Well, at least we know you like it," she said.
He towered over her like a lumbering giant.
His eyes trailed up and down her body, devouring her.
David's hand stretched out to touch her. Sage took a step back, just out of reach.
“But I just put the dress on. Don’t you want to see?” she teased.
David took a step forward. Eyes still dancing across her. Taking her. Wanting her.
His hand reached out again. Sage caught his thick wrist and stopped it.
"Hasn't been a month yet, remember? Part of the rules,” she said.
David Chuckled. "Yeah yeah… the rules."
His gaze was intoxicating. The light cut his jaw so perfectly. The evening made his giant figure insatiable.
His hand moved towards her.
Sage let it go as his fingers found one of the straps on her shoulder.
She didn't pull away as they touched her skin.
"What are you doing?" she whispered.
David slowly pulled the strap off her shoulder without a word. She watched him as his fingers began to slip off the other. The weight of her breasts pulled the dress down.
"You're going to blue ball yourself," Sage said softly.
David looked into her eyes as he slowly tugged the dress down her waist, exposing her chest. Their eyes caught one another. He waited for her to say something, and she waited for him to move. Then his veiny hand reached for her breast and gave it a firm squeeze. Sage's breath left her at the touch. She felt her panties begin to soak as David's fingers pinched her nipple.
Then he downed his drink and put the empty glass on the coffee table before turning to her.
Silence found them again as his eyes trailed across her body.
"Squeeze them together," he said.
Sage tilted her head.
"What do you say?"
David breathed through his nose.
"Pretty please," he replied.
Sage did as she was asked. She put her hands on either side of her breasts and pushed them together, watching with eager arousal as David's jaw clenched, and his cock pitched a tent in his tiny shorts.
The veins in his arms bulged, and his broad chest flexed with excitement. He reached for her again.
Sage stepped back.
She bit her lip as a frustrated smile formed on David's face.
"Sage…" he said in a low voice.
"I told you… I’m just here for the dress."
David thought for a moment, then, as if a switch flipped, his excitement gave way to disinterest. He rolled his eyes and nodded slowly.
"Well, you got the dress."
"I did," Sage confirmed, still playing with her own breasts, trying to recapture David’s attention.
"Guess that means you should get going then, huh?" He sounded so authentically disinterested that Sage wondered if he was actually done with her.
Sage bit her lip. Doing her best to hide the painful desire that his rejection sparked.
It was a drug in her veins.
The spur in her side.
An unspoken wound reopened that she now needed to mend.
And loved to mend.
"You want me to go?" she pouted, stepping forward.
David stood right where he was, watching in disinterest as her dress slowly slipped down her waist and stopped at the curve of her hips.
"Seems that might be the best thing. Have to wait a month after all, right?” he said dismissively.
Sage’s heart raced, only finding solace once she glanced at the pitched tent in his shorts.
"Well, if you really want me to…" she slipped the straps over her shoulders once more and began to move to the sliding door.
David made no reaction. Sage began to wonder if he was really about to reject her.
Her trembling fingers touched the handle.
"Wait," David said. Sage smiled as she turned to look at him.
Then her heart sank when she saw him holding her sweatshirt and pants.
"You forgot these," he said.
Heart thumping, she walked back to him. Steady and slowly. Stopping only inches away as she reached for the clothing, and let her fingers touch his.
"Thanks," she said. She felt the veins on the back of his hands, and when he made no move, she trailed her hands up his wrists and squeezed.
The dam broke.
David dropped the clothes and wrapped his arms around her waist hard enough to take her breath away.
His long shaft pushed between her thighs, and Sage felt her body cry in agony at the touch. Yearning to be filled by something so big. Begging to be broken as it had so long ago.
A desperate desire to be chosen.
A syringe injected into her veins.
Sage didn’t stop David as he pressed his lips hungrily against hers and began to devour her.
