Richard realized that although what Joseph said does fall within the deal that he struck with his best friend's wife, it was entirely against the spirit of the deal. Richard knows that things could and most likely would end extremely poorly if he handed Leia over to her son right now. Thinking quickly on his feet, Richard says," Just because you are asking for her doesn't mean you are driven to be successful." The look on Joseph's face told Richard that he had to at least concede something, or else he might go to the police. Knowing that the best thing he could do is buy time for his friend to finally grow a spine, Richard said, "Until you actually make something of yourself and can afford her, you and I will share ownership of her."
