What does Saburo choose?
Quiet Acceptance (Ending 1)
Ten years had passed since Saburo left the village a broken man. His family had been shocked by his condition, and his recovery was slow. In time, however, he regained his strength and began helping with the family business, taking on small duties such as shipping wares between the islands, a task well suited to his sailing experience.
Eventually, his family arranged a marriage between him and Fumiko, the daughter of a fellow merchant family.
Fumiko was beautiful, considerate, and well-educated. Even Saburo’s brother felt a twinge of jealousy. Saburo himself was always courteous, and in time he came to love her. Even so, a hollow place remained in his heart where the memory of his lost love, Narumi, still lingered.
Saburo, now captain of his own ship, ordered his crew to prepare for docking. When he stepped onto the pier, he saw Fumiko waiting for him with a warm smile. A moment later, their child came racing down the dock and leapt into his arms. Kinji’s broad grin drew an answering smile from his father.
“Otousan! Look what I found!” the little boy exclaimed, holding out his hand to reveal a vibrantly colored seashell. “I found it this morning!”
Saburo studied the shimmering shell, watching its colors shift in the light. An old memory rose within him, and a single tear slipped down his cheek. Kinji’s smile faded as he looked up at his father with concern.
“Otousan?”
Saburo sniffed, wiped his eyes, and smiled at his son. “It’s nothing, Kinji. The shell is beautiful. Come on, let’s go before we make your mother worry.”
Together, the two walked down the dock toward the shore. It may not be a life he envisioned he would have, but it was one Saburo would embrace. His family gave him the strength to push forward. But even then, his past love would always remain in his heart, and in dreams of a life long ago.
Unaware that out at sea, a shape bobbed among the waves before slipping beneath the water once more.
The end.
