Chapter 2 by BKHelghan BKHelghan

What's next?

Projekt Tonkatsu

-As Ash walked into the building, he saw that the place had holographic banners with the company's logo on at least 4 pillars, detailed security in the lobby, as well as a young woman and a young man sitting at the center desk, talking to people who were approaching them and pointing out certain areas in the building. Ash figured those were the receptionists and walked towards them, shifting his eyes around a bit to see if people would notice his obvious attire difference. However, because his body makes him pass as a female, no one in the building was any the wiser and thought he was a female.-

"Welcome to Projekt Tonkatsu, how may I be of assistance?"

"Hi, I was wondering if a Mr. Davidson was available? He has an appointment with me at 10 am."

"One second, please."

-The woman looked through her holographic computer and typed in Davidson's name to see his schedule.-

"What is your name?"

"Ashlin McRivers."

-The woman looked through the schedule for his name and found the appointment.-

"I'll see if he came in. He had a 9 o'clock and left, but I didn't see him come back yet. One second, let me see if he used the other entrance."

-The woman picked up the phone and called Davidson's desk, but there wasn't any answer, so she had Ash sit in the lobby to wait for him to walk into the door. Ash was nervous, wondering what type of questions would be asked and how could he explain the fact that he is wearing a skirt when he made the application as a male. When the clock reached twenty-five after 10, a man arrived through the door with an entourage behind him asking questions. He motioned for them to wait for him as he approached the receptionist desk, to which the woman pointed at Ash prompting the man to walk over to Ash,-

"I do apologize for the wait, my name is Aron Davidson. I had a 9 o'clock and wanted that to be done so I could meet you. For now, let me see if I can get these guys to buzz off and we can begin the interview, ok?"

"Sure thing."

-Aron walked over to the group and send something to them, which made them nod their heads and walk towards the cafeteria. Aron motioned for Ash to follow him and he followed towards a set of stairs to the second floor and another set leading to the third. Aron's office was on the third floor, which they walked towards and Ash saw a sizeable amount of security guards.-

"Quick question: what is with the guards? I thought this was a gaming company?"

"We are, but we also share with some people on the upper floors and they are under a lot of flak since a majority of their workers are augmented. Which reminds me, do you have any augments?"

"No."

"Ok. Personally, I don't care if you are augmented or not, but this job you are wanting will probably want you to get an aug."

"I understand but I want to show my skills and knowledge just like everyone else. I don't want to be judged because I don't use augs."

-Aron brought Ash into his office and motioned for her to take a seat before closing the door and walking to his chair,-

"I completely understand where you are coming from, Ashlin and if it was up to me on how I want my employees to be: I would have chosen for folks to not get augmented unless they absolutely believe that they need it and not because some corporate suits say otherwise. But for now, let's get started on the interview. Tell me a bit of yourself, Ashlin."

"I'm a recent graduate from BMCC with honors, I am planning to get a job as a software engineer, I have at least 10 years of volunteer work from different sites and I'm good with teams."

"That's good, now can you tell me why you are the best pick out of the many others who applied for this position?"

"I think I am the best because I've been a developer for a few gaming servers a few years ago and I've learned how to use programs like Lua, learned how to fix bugs that would break a server for a few days and I've even volunteered at one of Firefox's on-sites."

-Just before Aron could ask another question, there was a knock at the door.-

"Come in."

-An Asain woman dressed in a black dress with her black hair tied behind her head walked into the room with a few papers under her arm and a serious look on her face. Ash didn't notice at first glance, but he saw that she clearly had some augs done but knew how to hide them well. She noticed Ash was looking at her, which caused him to quickly turn around and look ahead of him. He never felt such an intense glance before and knew that she meant business. When she approached Aron, she dropped the pile of papers and whispered in his ear to which he nodded and hummed. When she was finished, she walked out of the room and closed the door leaving Ash trying to figure out who she was and what she could be in this building.-

"That was my supervisor. She might be your new supervisor too when you get the job. Speaking of which, is there anything you would like to ask me?"

"Nothing at the moment."

"Alright, let's continue then."

-Aron continued to ask Ash some more questions and after a few minutes, they finished the interview and both of them exit the office talking about the history that technology has been through just to get to where it is and even getting Aron to talk about his childhood and what he did before he discovered his love for programming software. When they reached the receptionist, Aron told Ash that the company will contact him as soon as possible, if not next week, and left him with the two receptionists and a small smile on his face. The female receptionist noticed Ash walking over to the door with a smile and decided to stop him for a quick chat.-

"Looks like the interview went well."

-Ash turned to look at the female receptionist,-

"Yes, it did. It was a lovely talk as well after he did all the questions, but I'm not too sure that I really did well to convince him, especially since I'm not augmented."

"I'm not physically augmented, but the neural ones really help, especially for those times when you forget your notepad that has all the important documents you need to remember for the security guards..."

-Ash looked around at the other visitors and employees there,-

"I don't want to get augmented just because it will secure my place in a job site. If I want the augs I should be able to get it of my own free will, right?

"Don't get me wrong, you are able to get whatever augs you want, but sooner or later, Congress or the UN is going to make it even tougher for folks like you to get augmented, which will make finding jobs like this that much tougher."

"It would be nicer if they didn't do that, but I guess corporations like Sarif, Strickland, and Yo-ta-ni are kinda leading this new change."

"Not to mention, Sarif just found a way to make augmentations way safer for people. They are planning to move to Washington with their findings soon."

"Things are not going to go smoothly for them. You know how many of those pro-humanists are going to be out there just waiting for them to step foot out of their helicopter?"

"Our company had a few of those uninvited guests come here last week and start throwing bricks at our windows. They really think augmented people are from a different planet or something and don't give a shit about our lives."

-The two talked for what seemed like hours about the Pro-Humanists, the problems for augmented people, the problems people wanting augs are facing and the best way to close the conversation: talks about vacation spots and last places they went for vacations. Ash then waved at the receptionists before leaving and heading down the street to check out what stores this side of Manhatten had if he wanted to go someplace during his lunch break. During his walk, Ash saw a couple of **** stores next to each other, a small supermarket that had its produce out in the public without any sort of cover to protect it from birds and a candy store.-

"A candy store? Here? Might as well see what they have. What the heck is the name anyway? Oh, it's an oriental store and the English name says... 'Nippon-Ya'. Heh, an interesting name to say the least but probably worth walking in and checking out."

-Ash walked into the candy store and was welcomed by the staff and the columns upon columns of various candies, with the majority being Japanese, which didn't surprise Ash one bit. Ash slowly felt himself turning into a kid again and walked around trying to figure out what he wanted to buy for himself and his roommate. After a couple of minutes, he finally arrived at the cash register with enough candy to satisfy a small neighborhood of children on Halloween which got the woman's attention and made her smile. Ash laughed nervously after figuring out that he might have indeed gone a bit overboard but still paid for them and left the store heading back towards the bus stop to tell his roommate the news. After a few more minutes of waiting, the bus finally arrived and he got on, and not to his surprise, the ride was uneventful until he got inside his apartment building. When he walked through both doors, he realized that he still had on his skirt and someone saw him with pants but decided to go to his room since it was an elderly person and they aren't normally active during the day but are instead watching TV. When he opened his door, he expected to see his roommate relaxing on the couch wearing her underwear and a bowl of chips next to her but the room was quiet and the lights were off, indicating that she left the apartment. Ash closed the door behind him, walked over to the couch and started to watch some TV.-
