Chapter 3

How does tomorrow go?
Progressively worse and worse
The sound of a horn shook me awake. Of course a full night's sleep wasn't an option. Why did I bother getting my hopes up? A second blast rang out again. Wait, that's not the wake up horn. We're under attack!
Everyone else in the barracks seemed to have the same realization at the same time. Panic ensued as everyone rushed to get weapons and armor ready and get out to the walls.
It's hard to describe my thoughts as I reached my post near the top of the wall. Concerned confusion would probably get most of it. There couldn't have been more than a hundred soldiers there. "Did I miss anything?" I asked the night guard that was still at my post.
"Not much. They've just been setting up ladders for the past few minutes"
What are they hoping for here? Is this meant to be a feint? Maybe just an advance ****? It has to be, unless they have some powerful classed with them. Just then one man broke off from their formation and started walking forward toward the gate. I couldn't see too well, but it didn't look like he was wearing any armor beyond a thin gamberson. This was getting more worrying by the minute. I'd never heard of a lord, or even a general wearing so little armor into battle. Whatever he was planning, it was nothing good.
DELVE
All I felt from him was excitement for a challenge. Shit. He's classed and he thinks he can beat us on his own. I aimed my crossbow at him, despite it probably not meaning much. "What are you doing?" came the voice of the soldier next to me. "Are you planning to shoot him for negotiating?"
"He's not coming to parley. Anyone with that authority would be wearing twice that armor at least." I pointed out. "My guess is he's classed and using negotiation as an excuse to get close."
As I said that, everything started happening. He started running, drew a wicked looking falchion, and the snow started to kick up around his feet. Then a massive burst of snow scattered away from him, and he shot upwards, landing on top of the wall.
Then came the sound of dozens of crossbows shooting at him. It almost felt like it happened in slow motion to me. Bolt after bolt whizzing towards him, only to be scattered aside by an unseen **** just before they found their mark.
OK, I understand why he was excited for this. He is insanely powerful. I loaded my crossbow, then got up and took aim. I hope this works.
MUDDLE
I shot just as I used my ability. I watched as my bolt flew towards him as he staggered from the muddle, and for the first time today, a bolt landed in his arm. YES! Now time to double down.
INFLICT
DISTORTION
At first he just looked stunned. Then his sword clattered to the ground as he clutched his arm in pain. Then, one more bolt found him and finished the job.
As much as I wanted to join the cheers as the first man fell, I looked over to see everyone else almost at the wall.
