Chapter 50 by carnivorous cow

Does Druuna invite Janette back to her room?

No.

Deciding that she didn’t want to spook the poor girl, Druuna parted company with the small brunette and went back to her room at the Lusty Mermaid Inn for the night. After a short dinner and a cold bath in the Inn’s built in water pump, Druuna stripped down to her thong and bra and pulled one of her books out from underneath her bed and began reading a random page. The book, marked “A farms biology: The nature of the edible world” seemed to be a mix of scientific information on various plants and a field guide about such things. Druuna read with great interest, thinking the books information might be useful.

"Chapter 8:Berries

Name: Red currant
Scientific name: Ribes rubrum
Location: Western & Central Europe, Asia, North America

Description: A deciduous shrub normally growing to 1-1.5 m tall, occasionally 2 m, with five-lobed leaves arranged spirally on the stems. The flowers are inconspicuous yellow-green, in pendulous 4-8 cm racemes, maturing into bright red translucent edible berries about 8-12 mm diameter, with 3-10 berries on each raceme.

Redcurrant fruit is slightly more sour than its relative the blackcurrant, and is cultivated mainly for jams and cooked dishes, rather than for eating raw. For example, in Scandinavia it is often used in fruit soups and summer puddings, and in Germany it is also used in combination with custard or meringue as a filling for tarts. However, unlike the cranberry, it certainly can be enjoyed in its fresh state and without the addition of sugar.

Name: Orange Skinheater
Scientific name: Ribes connubialis
Location: Eastern North America

Description: a small shrub growing to 1–2 m tall. The leaves are alternate, simple, 3-5 cm long and broad, and palmately lobed with five lobes, with a serrated margin. The flowers are 4–6 mm diameter, with five reddish-green to brownish petals; they are produced in racemes 5–10 cm long. When not in fruit, the plant looks similar to the redcurrant shrub, distinguished by a strong fragrance from leaves and stems. The fruit is an edible berry 1 cm diameter, bright orange in color, with a glossy skin and a persistent calyx at the apex, and containing several seeds dense in nutrients.

The Orange Skinheater is not a naturally occurring plant. In 2078 this odd plant started growing in forested areas along the East coast. Federal authorities eventually tracked down the source of the mutated bushes to a research company; a pharmaceuticals company known as Kebner & Smindt. The bushes had been beeing developed for use as an aphrodisiac when a number of seeds somehow got outside the enclosed facility. While the government was able to shut down any further development of Ribes connubialis, the plant was not as easy to remove. The hardiness of the plant and the use of it as an illegal crop to be sold as an aphrodisiac kept the Orange Skinheater from being destroyed.

The Orange Skinheater gets its name from its bright orange color and the effects it has on humans. When ingested, the berry causes the eaters skin to grow warm and their body to exhibit symptoms of sexual arousal. The more berries eaten, the more intense the experience becomes, eating any number of bushels over fourteen is highly discouraged, as it has been reported that the risk of the consumer experiencing a heart attack due to such arousal increases to a dangerous degree at this point."

Druuna was getting tired at this point, but something was bugging her. She could have sworn the orange fruit looked familiar. After pondering it over for awhile, Druuna gave up and went to sleep. Tomorrow would be there soon, and she would need her rest.

The next morning...
