He turned to Ellie. “Uhh, no, I don’t know who she is, and you know full well this is the first time I’ve been here,” he defended himself.
“Well, whose fault is that, John? You didn’t even ask about me, you just went straight to using a scrying spell on me without even saying hello.” Leilani’s voice was sweet and melodic with a hint of playfulness.
John was taken aback for a moment; he’d never actually met a fairy before, but he was aware of some myths and legends involving them, especially remembering things concerning manners. “Right, I am so sorry about that.” John half bowed his head not knowing how he should show respect to a fairy queen.
“Don’t be silly, you always have permission to use scrying spells on me, but next time at least greet me in advance, and for the record, you don’t have to use a spell to find things out from me. I will tell you anything you want to know, you only need to ask. I’m an open book to you, and feel free to call me Lani” Lani said as she fluttered over to John; she gave him a quick peck on the lips before latching onto his arm.
John looked over at Ellie; she had an amused expression and he could tell she was checking Lani out. She noticed John catching her and gave him a wink then licked her lips seductively at him before her face turned more serious and she looked to Lani. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Leilani. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but could you tell me a little about yourself please?” she asked.
Lani’s smile faltered and she seemed to look at Ellie with disdain. “That’s none of your concern. In fact, human, you are lucky that you entered the forest with John because I would have just let you get lost and die if he wasn’t here.”
Ellie flinched as if she’d just been slapped across her face and her brow furrowed. “Excuse you? Is that how you talk to people who are trying to be nice to you?”
Lani turned back to John, pushing her face into him and taking a deep breath. “Mmh, you smell so nice. Be a dear and keep your mate in line, please, my patience is beginning to thin... Anyway, I may have been following you since you entered the forest and listened to most of what you were saying and you wanted to see the Silverwood, right?” Lani chirped, swinging from John’s arm.
Before John could say anything, Ellie grabbed John’s other arm and piped up, “Yeah, we were going to look at the giant tree, but we’ll find it on our own, thank you very much!”
Lani glared at Ellie. “Good luck! You’ll never find it! Let me guess, you were travelling in a straight line towards it? Guess what, this place isn’t called The Lost Forest because there are signs pointing the way for you. I’ll give you two guesses why it could be named that.” She looked up at John with a sweet smile. “But don’t you worry your cute butt, my sweetpea, I’ll lead you to the tree no problem, and then, if you decide you want to leave, I’ll show you back the way you came.”
John looked at Lani who had the sweetest smile, then to Ellie who had a look that said: “Don’t you fucking dare, I don’t want to go anywhere with her!” He let out a loud sigh and let his head fall back.
John turned back to Ellie with a pleading expression. “Ellie, we don’t really have much of a choice, we were already lost, and if she says she’ll lead us there, we can’t really pass that up. Think of it this way, if she’s telling the truth and we go off on our own, we could get completely lost here and probably die, and she did just save us, I don’t know why she’d do that if she planned on hurting us later,” John reasoned.
“Well, she could just show us the way back. I don’t even want to see the tree anymore,” Ellie huffed and pouted.
“I could do that, but then John would miss his chance at getting some of the Crystalised Dragon Blood I have, and from the sound of it he really wants some. Isn’t that right, sweetpea? Oh, also, what do you want it for anyway?” Leilani cooed as she stared up at John with a bright smile.
John was caught off guard and did a mental double-take. “Wait, how did you know I was looking for that?” John questioned.
“Been following you for a while, listening in to your conversations, remember? I’ve only said it like a billion times already, not that you even paid attention to the first time.” She smiled.
“Wait… You were following us? So you were here when the dullahan first started attacking us? Why didn’t you help before?” John asked, a little agitated.
“Because,” Lani fluttered up, bringing herself to his eye level, and softly booped his nose before leaning into his ear so their cheeks touched, “where’s the fun in that?”
John’s annoyance rose and caused him to snap, “What? What do you mean where’s the fun in that? We could have been seriously hurt or killed. If you were there this whole time, you could have stopped this before it had even begun!”
Lani backed away from him when he began raising his voice, her brow furrowed and her cheeks puffed up. She allowed him to finish before speaking up herself, “Excuse me, mister! But I helped you plenty. Do you think she,” Lani pointed at the floating Dullahan, “was actually the one to make noise? I broke branches and made noise so that you’d be on the lookout and notice her because guess what? She’d been following you for almost 10 minutes without your knowledge and looked like she was about to make her entrance in a much more gruesome way. Most likely with your little pet’s head being on the end of her broken sword before either of you had even noticed her!” Lani looked obviously angry, but not in a threatening way, it seemed closer to a child throwing a tantrum.
Lani got closer to John’s face. “Also…” she seemed to calm down, “don’t you think it was a little strange that the dagger that she threw managed to miss all of your pet’s vitals even though it would be extremely easy to do so? She didn’t hit her liver or kidneys, it also managed to miss her spine and heart, but most surprisingly she even missed both of her lungs. You know what isn’t surprising though? I happen to be able to move objects with magic, and if you didn’t happen to have a healing spell, she would have easily been able to last until we got back to the Silverwood and I wouldn’t have let you or your pet or even the Dullahan die. Killing for food is one thing, but I will not have anyone killing in my forest for any other reason!”
Lani stopped being nose to nose with John. She closed her eyes and leaned her forehead against him, taking a deep breath. “Now, if you want to apologize, then we can head back to the Silverwood. If you decide you want to listen to your pet over there, then you can just join me for a quick lunch before I show you out. If you would prefer to stay and listen to the offer I will make in exchange for giving you the Crystalised Dragon Blood I have, then that’s for you to decide.”
John sighed, “Okay... Sorry Lani, I shouldn’t have yelled like that. I’m just sick of being so much fucking weaker than anyone or anything I fight and having to be saved or run away or just take a beating, and I’m especially annoyed I couldn’t protect Ellie. Thanks for helping us.”
“See, isn’t that better? And I forgive you. And... I guess... I could have probably stepped in sooner like you said, but I was curious what you would do. I thought I could sense an immense power in you, but I guess maybe I was sensing your potential… Now I have two conditions before we head back to the Silverwood. This is the first.” Lani moved slightly back then softly pressed her small gentle lips against his. Before he could push her away or argue, she’d already slowly backed away.
John quickly looked at Ellie who seemed on the verge of snatching the fairy out of the air and tossing her, but she stopped as John gave her a pleading look. “Ellie, it doesn’t sound like we have much choice. Let’s just see what the other condition is before running off to get lost.” Ellie continued to glare and reluctantly huffed in agreement before pulling him to close and giving him a forceful but passionate kiss.
“Now if you are finished, you are carrying me back. I don’t want to walk and I’ll have to take more and longer breaks to restore my magic if I fly and carry her with me.” She pointed to the Dullahan. Turning back to look at Lani she had disappeared, he looked around and then Jumped as she landed on his shoulders. She shuffled around on him and John could feel her breasts bouncing and rubbing against the top of his head.
John looked over at Ellie again; she still looked pissed but bit her tongue. “Okay, which way then?” John half groaned. He was curious, but knew that sooner or later he was going to be getting an earful from Ellie for taking Lani’s side whether that was what he’d done or not.
“That way, my noble steed,” Lani chirped as she pointed in a direction. They began walking with the body of the Dullahan levitating around two foot off the ground behind them.
“Lani, could I ask you a question without you being upset or anything?” John asked as they continued to walk.
“You can ask me anything you want to, sweetpea,” Lani replied happily, “I’d never be mad at you.”
John shrugged off her new nickname for him. “Uh, okay, well, I wanted to know, why are you being hostile towards Ellie?”
“Well, John, I don’t know if you realise this or not but she’s a human. Even if she has your scent all over and even… inside her, I can still smell it and you know what humans are like,” Lani answered, pointing John in another direction that he followed.
“Uh-huh… So, why are you treating me nicely then? I’m human too,” John questioned.
“No! It might be strange, but I can still smell dragon coming from you, John, you can’t fool me,” Lani giggled.
“Oh right, I consumed that Crystalised Dragon Blood and it said I got a mutation, but I’m still a human, Lani. Why don’t you like us?” John probed. The whole time the two talked, Ellie gave them both the silent treatment.
“Because the only thing humans want is to take anything and everything they can, and they will destroy what they have to in order to do so. According to one of the humans that came into my forest, there is a rumour that there is a great treasure in my forest. They will come here, burn down my forest and kill any of the creatures living here in order to find it, that is if I don’t do anything to stop them. I have given humans chances time and time again and more often than not they either outright attack me or try stabbing me in the back in order to try and get the treasure they think they will find,” Leilani explained.
John nodded. “Okay I can understand that but not all humans are the same, you know. I can promise you that neither I nor Ellie are here to try and steal any kind of treasure. We’re only here because we were curious about the giant, blue leafed tree and we don’t plan on taking anything that belongs to anyone or anything,” he defended. “I’m not going to lie, though, if we did find anything, we would be happy to get some kind of treasure or something while we were on our way, but we don’t want to destroy or hurt anyone while doing it. Up to now the only time we’ve tried hurting anyone was after we were attacked.”
“I… I believe you, John, but do you promise that she isn’t planning on stabbing me in the back?” Lani asked, shooting daggers at Ellie.
“I promise, Lani. Right, Ellie?” John looked over at Ellie.
She rolled her eyes and groaned, “Yeah, our intention wasn’t ever to destroy or hurt anything, We just thought the tree was pretty and wanted to take a closer look.”
“You think my tree is pretty?” Lani perked up.
“Well yeah, I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s the biggest tree I’ve ever seen, and more than that, it’s the first tree I’ve ever seen with blue leaves, it’s breathtaking.” Ellie’s voice took on a more sincere tone.
“T-thank you, and E-Ellie, I’m… I guess I’m sorry for being rude to you, it’s just not easy to trust a human when my only experience with them has been so terrible. I might still be wary of you but I’ll try to be nicer. If only for John’s sake,” Lani confessed.
“It’s fine… I’m sorry for being a bitch back at you.” Ellie half-smiled.
They continued walking for a while in silence before John spoke up again, “So Ellie, Lani said she has some of the Crystalised Dragon Blood that I need but we really should think of finding some way to keep you safe, and we just learned that I’m obviously not going to be able to protect you... “ John fell silent for a moment and ground his teeth. “I’m barely able to protect myself. We will have to keep an eye out to find anything that might be useful for you to use since you can’t use magic.”
Before Ellie could open her mouth, Lani chimed in, “Yeah, you will definitely need some means of protection. I have a friend that might be able to help back at the Silverwood but she won’t just give you what you want free of charge,” Lani informed them. “Oh, we are here.” Lani pointed them towards a small stream and directed them to stand in it.
The stream reminded John of the winding country road his mother and he had travelled on while on vacation in Europe. The stream itself was wide but extremely shallow, maybe only an inch deep, meaning he could stand in it without getting wet, it snaked down past where John could see and the trees seemed to stand at least a metre away from the water.
Looking upstream, though, maybe 20 feet away, was a rock formation with an arch the stream cut through. The formation was mostly hidden by autumn trees and red vines. Through the arch, John could see that the forest seemed to thin, but he was unable to see the Silverwood.
John took a deep breath, putting his trust in this fairy he’d only just met. He looked over at Ellie who just shrugged at him. ’Okay, John, this was what we came looking for and we let Lani guide us this far, might as well see it through,’ he thought to himself.
