What's next?
Head to the medical tent
"I'm sorry sir, but I have to ask for your patience, and for your leave, I need to go to the medical tent"
"Oh that's quite alright, I need to speak to the woman you bested as well. This concerns both of you" the cleric responded with a studied patient beligerence "But if you'd rather make me repeat myself I will wait."
The words strike you oddly, it seems like an odd coincidende "Why do you need to talk to me? You don't even know me" as you start to make your way to the tent
"I know OF you, Michael Mastbreaker." Startling you more "and that should be enough. Your hereditary title is looked down upon by other families. Some see your family as having just gotten lucky for the circumstances that advanced your great-grandfather, and that's the gentle interpretation." The cleric speaks truth, though hardly revelatory "You could have spoken to any other noble in the kingdom for that information" you retort
"Perhaps, but how many nobles do you suspect know your family is not actually of this land? That your fealty is to a lord not of your own people?"
This statement stops you in your tracks, just before you enter the medical tent. While not a closely guarded secret, that is far from common knowledge, and a sore subject for your family to this day "How? How do you know that"
"There are things one can learn in an hour of study and quiet contemplation that can not be learned in a lifetime of swordplay. Simply, I know this because I have to, and I'm asking you to do something because you have to."
Entering the tent, you see at least a sliver of good news, that the Paladin you struck is already awake. Her foul mood is not improved by your presence, evidence by the look on her face. Still, you feel you should at least try to make your amends "Hey there, how are you doing?"
"I'm on my feet, sellsword, so my day fares well." She spits at your feet. "You struck well, I'll give you that. It's about as much as the likes of you can be expected of" While you're relieved that she doesn't carry resentment about the duel, her behavior suggests she knows who you are. She walks away immediately, and you find yourself chasing after her.
"What do you want? You don't need to give an apology, and I'm uninterested in hearing one"
"No, it's not that. Well, okay, it is that, but he needed to talk to you about something. Us, actually"
Her tone shifts towards reverence when speaking to the Cleric "Gooday Bishop, how may I be of service?"
The Bishop, been given control of the moment, starts to lead you two away from the tournament to provide some privacy "You may begin by stop berating your new friend with every syllable and sideways glance. You're going to be working with him, on a very difficult task, and your hostility will only make it more difficult."
She looks back at you and spits at your feet again, than turns back towards the Bishop "Yes of course, what is needed of me?"
"You're going to help him find someone. An incredibly important someone."
"This doesn't sound that difficult. Who are we looking for?" You respond. With luck, you can convince this old man to only send her.
"You are looking for a young woman, the lost Princess of Agito, so that she can take her proper place on the throne"
This is impossible: Agito is the country your family from, a country that no longer exists, conquered by the larger Intrasican Empire. The paladin is equally shocked and defiant
"Absolutely not!" She yells "You are ordering me to participate in armed insurrection against my own country. To help some mongrel whelp who likely can't even spell her own name let alone lead a fight against the Empire. Why must I be the one to participate in such an impossible task?"
The Bishop's face was stone "Because, Gabrielle Grace Lernow, you possess the depth of faith to see this task to the end. And because your family were the ones responsible for deposing a rightful King of lands you have no business claiming. It is your duty to set things right"
Gabrielle is quiet, pondering the words inwardly "I understand Bishop, and I will comply." She turns to you contemplatively "So, that explains why you're involved."
You nod solemenly "I guess so, but I'm still not sure I believe what you're saying. What you're saying, what you're asking us to do, is impossible"
"That's why she's coming with..." As he stands between the two of you "You will rely on her faith just as she will rely on your determination. And if your faith proves insufficient, than rely on your sense of the duty. The duty to your true country"
You can't disagree with the Bishop on this, much as you realize this is a fool's errand.
Where do you start looking for the lost Princess?
