You go and chat with Kat's friends.

You and Katherine enter the dance early, while people are still meeting and mingling. You fancy that eyes are turning to see you with such a pretty girl on your arm. Was asking Katherine a favor to Rebecca, or is it the other way round? You're almost tempted to lift
her up on her shoulder to show her off. Maybe later, if the evening goes well.

You smile, thinking of the cash in your pocket, Kat's parents' hot tub, and the bottle of good champagne tucked in the back of your car next to a bag of ice.

Your buds from football are hanging around on a knot at one side of the refreshment area, while Katherine's friends are clustered next to a pillar on the other side, chatting away. Katherine gets on tiptoe and waves to Rebecca, who waves back and smiles. "Can we stop over there for a sec?" Kat says, giving you a cute little smile.
"Sure thing," you say. The talk seems to be about travel clothes, especially shoes, and your head begins to nod blankly. "Kat," you say, "Can I get you a snack or drink?" Kat asks for a diet lemon lime, and you scoot toward the buffet table. You dodge past the people milling about the front of the table, tuck the last packet of honey-glazed almonds into your coat pocket (what a prize!) and get drinks for you and Kat.

With half an eye on your mates, to make sure you're not missing anything, you edge back toward Kat and her friends. Unfortunately, you side-step onto the foot of the school's media teacher. As you step quickly to regain your balance, your drink splashes over the front of her blouse.

"Aah-ah!" she exclaims with surprise. Not the impression you were hoping to make on one of your two biggest dream girls! Did Kat notice?

You start into an apology, but notice she's looking up and smiling at you. You carefully raise your eyes to hers from your hangdog gaze at her chest, and search for the right words.
