He wants to know more about you.

"So, how do you and Alex know each other?" Bill asked.

"From school." you say. "We've had a few classes together, and a few mutual friends." All true, but not exactly what you would say under most circumstances.

"I see. And are you going to be going to college this fall?" Bill asked, then taking another bite of his lunch.

"Oh, I'm not sure. I'm kind of on the fence about it." you say. "I'm not ruling it out, but I'm not in any rush."

"I can understand that. I sometimes wish I had taken a year off after high school. Still, I can't complain too much. Had I waited, I may not have met my ex wife or had Alex, and I may not have the job I do now."

You nod, sipping your lemonade. You weren't sure exactly what he was telling you this for, but you'd let him vent.

"Still, it is interesting to think about what could have been. And if things had changed, maybe I wouldn't be in the situation I am now."

"Uh, what situation?"

"I have a big work party tonight, to celebrate one of my bosses' accomplishments, and I have no one to bring with me. As foolish as it may sound, that sort of thing can be held against you. My bosses are old fashioned, family people."

"Wow, that sucks." you say. "I wish I could help you out."

Bill paused for a moment, then looked at you. "Really?"

You raise an eyebrow, replaying what you had said. Shit, did I really just...? "Um, yeah?"

Bill rubs his chin for a moment. "Then, would you be willing to come with me to the party tonight? I could provide anything you need."

You bite your lip. This is a fucked up situation you managed to get yourself into.
