Not Exactly

Raven nearly spat out her water and Jinx dropped her fork. They looked at each other for a moment, then back to me. "We...uh..." Raven began, wiping her mouth with a napkin, "...we aren't sure." I cocked an eyebrow at this. "Remember when we told you about the facility we escaped from? That's about the earliest memory we seem to have."

That wasn't the answer I expected. "So...wait, you don't remember ANYTHING prior to that?" I asked. "Well...yes and no," Raven replied with an expression that seemed both sheepish and uncomfortable. "We know things. I know my name. I know what I am...basically we KNOW things, but we don't remember them." Jinx nodded at that, apparently finding that to be the best way to put it.

Seeing my expression, Jinx shrugged. "We're as puzzled as you, Johnny. Back at that place, they'd ask us questions like who our best friends were or where we were born and we'd find ourselves answering if we knew. Like, for me, I don't know where I was born."

"I was born in Azarath," Raven interrupted, perking up a bit. "Where's that?" I questioned. Immediately she deflated. "I've no idea," she confessed with some bitterness.

"AS...I was saying," Jinx snapped, giving Raven a sour look, "we were in that facility for a while, being tested and poked and prodded. It was weird and they never told us what they were looking for. ...we didn't like it there." The pink haired sorceress, looked down at her food, poking it with her fork.

Seeing that Jinx was finished, Raven continued for her. "Not that they hurt us," she assured me. "It was just...uncomfortable. The fact that they never said what they were trying to do only made it worse. Then the dreams started." Her cheeks gained a bit of pink. "The dreams about you. It...uh...took us a bit to work it out, but eventually we escaped together."

"But not before I decided to search your name up on the computer," Jinx said, puffing her chest out a bit. Raven grumbled but didn't protest that statement. "Once we had that info, we went to your house immediately. You didn't live too far away." Shrugging, Jinx picked up her fork again and shoved another mouthful in.

Huh...well, that's one way to get around making a complicated origin story. I wondered if they really were held in a facility, then allowed to escape once they had passed all the quality tests or if it was entirely fabricated. Both were possible. "Well...you're both safe here now," I assured them. "Assuming you don't cause me too much trouble."

"We'll be good, Johnny!"

"We promise!"

Well, that was a promise I knew would be broken soon. Once the meal have been polished off, Jinx leaped across the table and grabbed my plate. "I'll get the dishes!" she sing-songed. I was momentarily surprised until I saw the look on Raven's face. She was annoyed, clearly having been thinking of doing the same thing. She seemed to be considering fighting Jinx over it, but she caught me looking at her. Knowing I wouldn't be happy with them arguing again, she seemed to swallow her annoyance and allowed Jinx to clean up. I could only assume they were trying to please me. If that was the case...Raven would soon be trying to outdo her.

I considered what to do next. I COULD just let them do whatever...but I valued my sanity and personal possessions. I wasn't leaving them alone any longer than I could...at least not until we go to bed. I COULD ask them what they wanted to do...and even if they started arguing, I could always put my foot down and decide for them. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't tempt fate. We could always just watch a movie...
