Side Story: Advanced Enchanting Techniques 1 - Links

„What are you preparing? “ Dorian asks, suspiciously eying Uklag as he gathers some of his materials. “The most basic example in the book.” The warlock answers with pretty much nothing, “Where is a knife around here? Ahh there.” He takes one of the three blocks of wood he has just picked from the workbench. Well it is less a workbench then a tree stump. Actually it is just a tree stump and if Uklag would be in a better mood, maybe he would transmute the thing into an actual workbench.

But the fact that he is currently in the lesser of two positions and the fact a mage would spy on his knowledge is darkening his mood a bit. Enough to not give them one of his good workbenches at the very least. Carving runes into all three blocks he turns to the older mage. “If you have any questions, about the topic, ask away. If you have any questions about the basics, keep them to yourself.” Uklag exclaims and slams the last block on the table after a slight delay.

“Catherine, if you ask something dumb prepare for a spanking, I don’t want you to embarrass me in front of my new ‘friends’.” Catherine makes a slightly uncomfortable expression but bows nonetheless. “Of course, Master Uklag.” Dorian just looks at the whole scene with interest, but is even more interested about the runes, they are more advanced than anything he has ever seen.

However he has just been warned not to ask about the basics so he keeps silent. “Today we talk about Link Enchantments. As the name suggests it’s the technique to link two or more items together. Flames that turn green when you draw a symbol on a piece of metal, collars that transfer feelings from one person to another, things like that. For my example we will go with simple Evocation.”

The two students look at the teacher who grabs the first two pieces of wood. “To achieve a Link one must synchronize two or more objects within a net of some sorts. You can get that by adding a few modifications to the Infusion and Condition phases of Enchanting. The hard part about these modifications is not to actually make them but to replicate them one to one, because otherwise you will only have a weak or even no Link.

Of course this is only when you enchant the objects one at a time. To not do that there are two possibilities one.” He raises his hands, the blocks still in his hands. “You enchant them at the same time. Like all higher techniques this requires a rather vast mental fortitude, but once you have mastered Channelling most things aren’t that bad.”

A moment later he throws one of the blocks on the ground, then kicks it so one of the runes points upwards. “Take it, Dorian.” He says and gives the newcomer the block he has still in hand. The elderly mage takes it and waits for further instructions, “Just channel some power into it.” Uklag urges him. He does and a small flame appears. “And just like that both are on.” The two students look to the ground where the second block is happily burning as well. “But I only put in enough power for one.” Dorian says. “Master has likely used a different Source for that one.” Catherine says and points at the one at the ground. “Yes, one of them is Cast Source while the other one is Charge Source.” Dorian seems to understand once he hears those words.

‘Some basic knowledge at least.’ Uklag thinks. “Exactly and this is what this technique has over its opponent.” He grabs the third block and moments later he holds two half as big wooden blocks. “Where you simply use the whole Enchantment process to create two pieced of the same object. However you hold the exact same Enchantment that will activate in accordance to each other, it makes for some pretty powerful but pretty boring effects.” He doesn’t even let them test it, instead he quickly burns the two blocks and throws the ashes out of the tent.

“One more, then I can have fun.” Uklag mumbles, then with a louder voice he says. “Okay, who is ready for Matrix Extraction?”
