Chapter 8 by rabbitjack rabbitjack

How well do your plans hold up?

Of course there are complications!

You are moving through the hastily-evacuated streets toward the Barracks when a blur of motion snaps your head to the side just in time to see someone charging you from the side. Your weapon goes clattering across the cobblestones in one direction, and your increasingly-inconvenient treasure-chest goes rattling in another. Standing above you is what must be the town's blacksmith, or someone equally familiar with hard labor. There is something familiar and **** in his eyes however... you roll to the side to avoid a crushing stomp delivered with all his significant weight behind it, only to catch a boot to the ribs as he follows through with his other foot. Despite your own physicality and momentum away from your attacker, your breath is well and truly knocked out of you.

You are helpless as the man moves over to pick up the chest with steps that are surprisingly light and dainty for a man his size. He is walking away before you are able to regain your breath enough to croak out a "Wait!" He does not answer you or set the chest down, but turns back toward you with a violent glint in his eye. He moves toward you, obviously intending to crush any challenge to his new ownership.

"Its yours!" You follow through, causing him to falter in his advance in confusion. "I'm not going to fight you for it. But the Fell will. They are surrounding the town as we speak, and they are the same type as the last group to attack through here so they will be heavily motivated by Greed. There's no way you can take them on your own, and there's no way that they will let you keep that stuff. Your best bet is to help us fight them off. Consider that as a mercenaries fee. Help us repel the Fell and you'll be free to take that on your way."

"If you follow me, I'll kill you." Is his only response. The words sound foreign, an accent you generally associate with something Asian though its not specific enough to place. Its completely different from the way people have spoken locally. Its also an obvious rejection of your offer. His footsteps fade quickly as he departs in a tireless trot. You stand, shaking your head and clutching your side. That is annoying for a number of reasons. You've had a run of failures in reading people since coming here. Still, at least they have what they wanted and shouldn't keep coming after you any longer. And you've still got a **** battle to fight.

How does the battle itself go?
