Chapter 12 by Gem Gem

Well. What is her answer.

Not much. For now.

Instead of answering me directly she took a few steps away from me, her sillhouette contrasting the dim light falling through my bedroom door. I noticed her outfit had a rather big tear on the back revealing her pale skin. Her left hand was raised to her head, covering half of her face and indeed she made the impression of a person deep in thought.

After a while I stood up, which made her aware of my presence again. Turning around she finally gave me an answer, her voice low but still firm.

"Something to eat."

I got up and made my way towards the door, Azula's eyes following me as I moved, which reminded me that I only wore boxers but apparently my assailant paid no mind to that.

After entering the corridor I immediatly reached for the light switch to turn the lights for the staircase. In retrospect I should've expected to find myself pinned against the wall, with a flame dagger in front of my throat once more.

"What was that?" This time, Azula's voice from far from silent and her face was filled with anger. "Whoa, calm down it's just an electric light." I tried to raise my arms in a defensive gesture but this only made her increase her pressure on my chest. I had to think of something fast.

"It's just a means of providing light without fire. With the war ongoing people are kind of twitchy with it." The firebender let her dagger fade once more before before taking a step back and crossing her arms in front of her chest.

"How do you know about the war?" There was a lot of suspicion in her voice but also genuine curiosity. Oh, right. I shouldn't even know about it, since 'There is no war in Ba Sing Se'. I might aswell use that to gain some common ground. "I've been outside the city. I have friends in areas that are now occupied by the fire nation. But here you can't talk about it, because the Dai Li will hunt you down for it. Those fuckers." I didn't find myself too convincing but apparently my Azula-bot swallowed it, as a faint grin appeared on her face.

"Seems even that asshole Long Feng can't control all of this city."

"You're on the run from them?"

"Something like that." She replied, although her voice and eyes were distant. After a few moments she regained her demanding voice and expression. "Go on now." She gestures me to continue my way to the kitchen. After getting there and this time informing her before turning on the light I start making a few simple sandwiches, while Azula wandered around the room, inspecting my kitchen appliances.

"What kind of a device is this?" She asked, pointing at your oven.

"That's electric oven, so you can cook without having to use fire."

"And that?"

"That's a microwave, used to warm up meals..."

"...without having to use fire." She finished the sentence for me. "You really are paranoid about this, aren't you?"

"Well, there have been quite a lot of accidents in the past, and it's rather comfortable like this so..." I shruged, as I put the plate with sandwiches and a glass of water on the table and sat down.

Azula walked over to the kitchen table and sat down aswell. I noticed she treaded lightly on one foot, probably a 'sprained ankle' from the fights she had programmed into her. As she started eating I finally got a chance to admire her in full light. At this point, I had to admit, if it weren't for the fact that I personally purchased her I would not have believed she wasn't a real person. Her skin looked absolutely authentic, her movements were fluent, even her chest moved up and down from her breathing. The Kyoshi outfit she wore wasn't exactly form-fitting, which I suppose made sense, since it wasn't really hers to begin with, yet I could make out her slender build under it. Her face still had traces from the complex makeup that came with her disguise, but there wasn't much left of it. Finally I looked into her amber eyes who were currently focused on her very early breakfast.

For a few minutes we sat in silence with Azula eating the sandwiches I made before I realized I hadn't really introduced myself. It could raise some questions if I suddenly called her by her name without her ever telling me.

"Ah, where are my manners. My name is Jonathan Doe, but just John will do."

Azula raised an eyebrow and gave me an amused look. "Are you always that friendly with burglars?"

"Well, I didn't really have any until now and so far you haven't taken anything from me that I wouldn't have given you if you had just asked."

She looked at me with a blank expression for a few seconds before resuming her meal. Well, that didn't go as planned.

"What's your name then?"

"Don't you think I would have told you by now, if I wanted to tell you? But I guess it can't hurt to tell you, I can still dispose of you later if things don't go as planned. My name is Azula. But Her Royal Highness, Princess of the Fire Nation will do." She gave me an intense stare, waiting for my reaction.

I leaned back into my chair, mainly to get some time to think about how I actually wanted to react. Maybe I should have thought about this before. Surely in any regular cicumstances any member of the Earth Kingdom would be either enraged, scared or in disbelief if someone reavealed themselves to be a high ranking noble from the Fire Nation.

"Well" I answered after a few moments "I figured you were some kind of high ranking military, but a princess... that's unexpected."

She stared at me for a little longer, as if awaiting some kind of different reaction, but when nothing came, continued to eat the last sandwich. I wondered what she was on about. Did she expect me to attack her, insult her maybe? Or did she actually think I was supposed to bow to her? Was I supposed to? Anyhow, she was done eating but remained sitting, apparently in deep thought again. I wondered what I should do next. Maybe try to question her about her run-in with the Dai Li, she had seemed to open up a bit, when I voiced my dislike for them. Another option would be to offer her some remedy about her injured ankle but I was sceptical about whether she would actually accept it. Or I could always just go back to bed, seeing it was still before 0600.

What to do now?
