Chapter 5

Is Laura going to look into the basement?
No, because something is going to distract her.
Laura was already looking for a light switch when she heard the knock on the front door. A cheery sounding but indistinct greeting reached her ears. Deciding the basement could wait, she turned to back and returned to the entryway. There, her mother was talking to a good-looking brunette of Christine's age, clad in rather proper looking skirt and jacket, a pair of glasses perched on her nose. "Oh, Laura!" said her mother cheerfully as she reentered the room. "This is our neighbor, Clara Crofton."
Clara smiled nervously. "Well, more like your tenant, really..."
Christine gave a giggle. "Oh, please. I'm not even sure I'm the owner of this place... Just... sorting things out, really." Christine turned towards her eldest daughter. "Anyway, Ms. Crofton was just telling me about why poor Mr. Hawkes couldn't be here to meet us..."
"Yes, he fell off a ladder doing some repairs a few days ago," muttered Clara frowning. "It was... I don't know why he even tried... he can barely use his left arm..."
"Men," muttered Christine, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, Clara and her daughter..."
"Mina!" said Clara, leaning towards Laura with a smile. "You will just love her. She's about your age..."
"Right, right, great..." muttered Laura, stepping away.
"Anyway, I was just coming over here to clear some things up, and tell you that if you need a little company, we're right across the way, in that little cottage..." Clara gave a little cough. "Well, we think it used to be a gardener's quarters..."
"Right..." said Christine, smiling. "We'll be sure to come over soon..."
Clara gave a distracted nod, as she glanced out the door at the gather darkness. "Good, we'll be happy to see you. I should get going... it's late..." She gave a nod, as she darted out. "Bye!"
Christine watched her go, smiling, then turned to her daughter. "Well, she seemed nice..."
"Yeah, yeah, I guess," muttered Laura. "Where's Lucy?"
"She went upstairs to find a bedroom," answered Christine. "I recommend you do the same. Like Ms. Crofton said, it's late, and we've taken a long trip."
Is Laura going to do as her mother says, or does the basement still beckon?
