What's next?
a cup of tea
At four o’clock on the dot, the heavy security key engaged in the deadbolt of the apartment door.
An icy shudder ran the length of my spine. I was sitting bolt upright on the chaise lounge, hands folded dutifully over the knees of my pleated wool trousers. Beneath the expensive fabric, every fiber of clothing felt alien: the damp, burgundy lace clung cold to the crease of my buttocks, and at the slightest shift, the steel cylinder drove stiff and uncompromising against my sensitized groin.
The double pocket doors to the entrance hall glided open, and my father entered the salon. Richard radiated that unshakeable, patrician gravitas that had always defined him. Draping his tailored loden coat over the back of an armchair, he ran a hand through his dense, salt-and-pepper hair and drew a deep breath.
"Good evening, my dears," he announced in his deep, resonant bass, approaching us with open arms.
Vanessa rose with the fluid grace of a stalking cat, closing the distance to offer him her cheek for a fleeting, cool kiss. Behind her, Loona smiled angelically, almost demurely, hands clasped loosely in front of her pale linen trousers.
"Wonderful to have you home, Richard," Vanessa purred softly. "How was the conference? Were you able to conclude everything to your satisfaction?"
"Splendidly, my dear, absolutely splendidly," my father replied with an offhand wave, stepping up to the large mahogany dining table. He spoke in those typical, non-committal clauses he had cultivated through decades on panels and advisory boards. "The new resolutions passed. The assessment team from Zurich tried to table the motion, but we pushed the budget allocation for the coming quarter through unanimously. The structural reallocation is finally signed, sealed, and delivered." He waved a worldly hand dismissively. "Bylaws, committee sessions, endless dinners. Crucial for one's standing, but utterly exhausting."
His eyes lifted from the portfolio notes in his hand and swept the room—taking in the gleaming herringbone parquet, passing the streak-free windows—before settling squarely on me.
I held my breath. The padlock beneath my fly felt as if it were glowing white-hot.
"John," he said approvingly, stepping forward. He rested a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder, looking me up and down. "My boy. Look at you. Straight-backed. A sharp parting, a proper sweater. One can tell immediately that entering the faculty is leaving its mark. This new posture… this composure suits you remarkably well. An aspiring physician must above all embody self-mastery before being let loose on patients."
"Thank you, Father," I forced out hoarsely, compelling my chin to a nod. My throat was clamped tight.
The sheer absurdity of the scene seized my stomach: my father stood before me, praising my sense of duty and discipline, while barely three paces away lay the floorboards upon which I had crawled on all fours just two hours earlier, shivering with shame, kissing the bare soles of the women of this house.
"And you, my beauty," Richard turned to Loona with unvarnished pride, smoothing her hair. "Your mother wrote to me about your recent exam results. And your coach at the tennis club was full of praise on the phone. A genuine athlete. Discipline truly pays off across the board."
Producing a slim, elegant leather wallet, he drew out a thick stack of fresh banknotes and laid them dead center on the dining table with a grand, paternal flourish.
"For your successes at the university and in sports," Richard announced magnanimously. "Five hundred for each of you. Treat yourselves to something proper. John, perhaps a top-tier stethoscope or specialist atlases for your anatomy lectures. Loona, new tournament gear."
Before I could even lift a hand, Loona’s slender fingers glided across the polished wood, gathering both stacks of bills to her chest in a single, fluid sweep.
"I'll manage the funds for the both of us, Papa," she cooed with a radiant smile. "You know how impractical John can be with finances. I'll make sure it goes precisely where he needs it most."
Beneath the table, Vanessa caught Loona’s eye instantly. The two women traded a microscopic, razor-sharp smile. A suffocating chill tracked up my spine. I had no idea what they were plotting or what new cruelties lay ahead—yet I understood with leaden certainty that my father had just proudly provided the funds to finance my deeper subjugation.
"As for you, Vanessa," Richard continued, stepping up to his wife to circle her waist. "I know how much you've had to forgo these past weeks. Your planned holiday to Florence… I spoke with the hotel this morning. We are extending it by a full week. Visit the galleries, enjoy Tuscany. You have earned it."
"You are far too generous to me, darling," Vanessa breathed in a smooth, flawless tone, her eyes resting cold on me over his shoulder. A full extra week in the Schöneberg flat without Richard in the house…
"Let us sit," Richard decided contentedly, settling into the leather armchair at the head of the table. "I am ravenous. Arissa may serve."
The swinging door to the kitchen parted. Arissa entered carrying a large, silver serving tray. She had tied a plain white apron over her form-fitting pencil skirt, yet every stride carried the triumphant composure of a woman who knew the true hierarchy of this household down to the letter. She set tureens of steamed vegetables and roasted veal before Richard.
As she circled the table to place a dish beside my plate, Loona’s hand rose. With a brief, elegant crook of her finger, she signaled Arissa over to her chair.
Arissa leaned down. With a sly, honeyed smirk, Loona whispered something into her ear.
For the fraction of a second, Arissa’s dark eyes widened with surprise. An eyebrow arched upward; she glanced from Loona across to me, appraising my rigid, tense posture in the fine sweater—and then a soundless, cynical smirk spread across her features. She gave a barely perceptible nod.
"Very well," she murmured, turning to retreat toward the kitchen.
Richard noticed nothing. He carved into his meat with relish, sipped his dry red wine, and expounded on the shortcomings of junior colleagues.
"One must keep the younger generation on a tight rein from day one, John," he lectured, gesturing with his fork in my direction. "Those who do not learn to respect authority unconditionally shatter in professional life. You have internalized that respect. I can see it clearly in your eyes today."
I stared down at my porcelain plate. The metal of the casing bit into my tissue with every breath. I could not produce a syllable.
The kitchen door opened once more. Arissa returned. In her bare, immaculately manicured hands, she balanced a delicate porcelain saucer bearing a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea.
She passed behind Richard’s broad back. Richard was thoroughly absorbed in his monologue, gesturing animatedly with his right hand as he looked across at Vanessa.
Directly within my father’s blind spot, Arissa slowed her pace.
Holding the cup just before her chest, she sought my gaze, locking onto me with cold, cutting malice. She waited until I looked up at her, until she had my undivided, panicked attention.
Then, she leaned forward slightly.
Utterly soundless, with open contempt and a mocking glint in her eyes, she spat a thick, viscous thread of saliva squarely into the hot tea. The amber liquid hissed faintly as it closed over her fluid.
Without breaking composure, offering only an unvarnished, derisive smile, she closed the remaining distance to my chair.
With exquisite deference, she placed the steaming cup right beside my right hand.
"Your tea, Master John," she purred with sugary politeness, loud enough to carry across the entire table. "To settle your nerves after such an arduous day. Drink it while it is hot."
An icy shock raced through my limbs. Beneath the mahogany, my fingers curled into tight fists.
"Go on, take a sip, John," Richard urged through a mouthful of veal, nodding encouragingly. "To have Arissa serve you tea unprompted… that shows just how well the harmony in this household operates. Don't hesitate, boy, or it will go cold."
Arissa drew back slowly from my chair. With swaying, measured strides and that casual poise that accompanied her movements, she crossed the floorboards toward the kitchen. Yet instead of clearing out entirely, she let the heavy swinging door come to rest half-open.
She remained standing right in the doorframe.
Leaning her shoulder against the white frame, hands crossed casually in front of her narrow apron, she stationed herself dead within my father’s blind spot. Richard sat with his back to her, unhurriedly slicing his roast, oblivious to what was transpiring behind him.
Arissa’s dark, almond-shaped eyes remained trained on me. A mocking, triumphant smile curled her lips. She was savoring every second; she was waiting to consume my surrender.
"There now, my boy," Richard addressed me again in a satisfied, muffled tone, dabbing his lips with a linen napkin. "A hot tea remains the best remedy against overwork. You looked terribly pale when I arrived. Drink it up, John. Sip by sip. It will get your circulation going."
My gaze remained hypnotized by the thin curl of steam rising from the cup. The amber surface caught the warm light of the dining room chandelier. Deep within the liquid, the fine bergamot of the tea blended with the thick, contemptuous saliva of the woman who had served me since childhood—and who, just hours earlier, had overseen my submission on bare knees.
At the other end of the table, the tension stretched to the snapping point.
Loona sat with a subtle, almost fond smile, watching me across the spread, advancing the tip of her stockinged foot beneath the table. Out of my father's line of sight, she pressed her toes directly against the most sensitive point of the steel housing. The cold alloy drove hard into my pubic bone; the narrow straps of the damp lace thong sawed into my hipbones. Every minute nudge of her toes sent a jolt through my pelvis—a perverse tangle of pain, submission, and that desperate, fevered arousal she had instilled in me in the shower.
Beside her, Vanessa raised her crystal flute a fraction of an inch, as detached as a judge delivering an uncontested verdict. Her grey eyes held mine without mercy. *Drink*, her gaze commanded. Show us who you are now.
Across the room by the kitchen door, Arissa tilted her head slightly, her smirk deepening. Raising a hand, she dragged a single, red-lacquered nail down her cheek, offering me a mocking nod. A silent order from the domestic staff to the son of the house.
There was no way out. If I hesitated, if I set the cup down or grimaced, my father would probe. The mask of the dutiful Charité medical student was the only barrier standing between social reality and total ruin.
With trembling fingers, I closed my hand around the delicate porcelain handle.
Leaning forward a fraction—the cylinder driving like a blunt wedge into my tissue—I brought the rim to my lips. The hot steam brushed against my nostrils.
Closing my eyes, I took a large, steady swallow.
The hot liquid washed over my tongue, coursed down my throat, and burned into my stomach like pure degradation. I tasted the heat, the sharp bergamot—and the inescapable reality of what Arissa had contributed to it. I swallowed it down. And took another draught. I forced myself not to break contact with the porcelain, while my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped beast.
A faint, breathy snort carried from the doorway.
Opening my eyes a fraction as I lowered the cup with unsteady hands, I caught sight of Arissa. She was biting her lower lip in amusement, her eyes flashing with pure malice. She had watched me consume her saliva, obediently, without a word of protest, right before the eyes of the man who had once taken her on that desk. Flashing one last dismissive glance, she pushed off the doorframe and vanished soundlessly into the kitchen to prepare the remaining courses.
"Excellent," my father commended without looking up from his plate. "Drain it to the dregs, boy. Nothing goes to waste in this house. You'll see, you will be in prime form for your seminars tomorrow morning."
Beneath the table, Loona increased her pressure. Her toes rotated slowly, in small, circular strokes across the cold metal of my cage, as if rewarding my flesh for its blind obedience. She held me with her wide, dark eyes—that soft, possessive gleam suffocating in its intensity.
"He is trying so very hard, Papa," Loona whispered smoothly, her voice sweet as honey. "The two of us are taking exceptionally good care of him."
I stared down at the half-empty cup before me. The padlock dangled unseen beneath the fine wool of my pleated trousers; the steel pipe pressed unyielding against my shrunken anatomy. I was no longer an autonomous man. I was no longer the heir to this name. I was the tamed, sealed property of the women at this table—and as I lifted the cup for the next swallow, I understood with absolute clarity that there would never be an escape from this house.
