What's next?
the night in her bed
The cool linen of the box-spring bed felt like an alien world. I lay flat on my back, the duvet pulled to my chest, eyes pinned to the ceiling where the streetlamp cast faint, amber ribbons through the drapes. The loose grey cotton boxers rested lightly against my skin. No base ring, no cylinder. Only the cool ointment over the raw, broken edges, and this unsettling sensation of being naked and defenseless down below.
The mattress gave under shifting weight.
Loona switched off the light, turned the deadbolt on the bedroom door, and slipped beneath the covers. A black silk camisole, bare shoulders emerging in the dim half-light. Cedarwood, fresh laundry, her skin. The space between us barely measured a handbreadth—yet she didn't lie down with her customary, fluid superiority. Her movements were heavy, almost erratic, dragged down by a deep, leaden exhaustion.
Stripped of the steel, my body responded instantly. Soft fabric, the rustle of her silk, the bare fact of being allowed to lie here—heat surged straight and hard into my groin. Under the duvet, the cotton lifted into an unmistakable ridge. Clamping my thighs together in a rush of shame, I fought not to look like the ravenous animal she had made of me all this time.
She turned toward me.
Her gaze drifted down the rigid line of my silhouette to the rise in the fabric. In the faint light, I could make out her eyes: dark hollows underneath, heavy lids, drawn cheeks. I waited for the mockery, for the instinctive reach toward a lock that was no longer there.
None came.
Her hand slid beneath the duvet. Her fingers didn't land where the pulse was hammering. They settled flat across my lower abdomen, just above the waistband, tracing slow, steady circles over the locked muscle. Her fingertips carried a faint, involuntary tremor—a fine vibration she couldn't entirely mask.
"Easy, John," she murmured, her voice rough, hoarse from the tears in the bathroom. "I see it."
She shifted closer. Thigh against thigh. Her free arm draped across my chest—firm, possessive, heavy enough to render resistance useless, yet holding a grounding weight, as though she needed the solid frame beneath her palm just as much as I needed the anchor.
"You're staring holes through the ceiling," she whispered faintly. "Exhale. Your ribs are so sharp you could cut yourself on them."
I swallowed hard. The conditioned reflex said: nod, perform, keep your mouth shut. But the dull throb in my groin, the tremor of her hand against my stomach, and the memory of her huddled before the tub tore away my defenses.
"Why did you do that?" The words rasped out harsher than intended, frayed with built-up confusion.
Her features didn't twist into derision. She simply looked at me, worn and startlingly transparent. "Do what, exactly? Throw Emma out on the street? Not let you rot?"
"No." Turning my head, I forced myself to hold her gaze. "You apologized. In the bathroom. You looked at me and said you were sorry. You've spent weeks making my life a living hell, you fed me to Emma—and now I'm lying here without a lock, and you look like you're about to fall apart."
A slight jerk ran through her shoulders. For the fraction of a second she squeezed her eyes shut, setting her jaw, and I saw how threadbare the leash on her composure really was tonight. With her free hand, she dragged two fingers across her temple—a restless, almost helpless gesture.
"Because I almost fucked it up, John," she forced out quietly, the bitterness in her tone directed entirely at herself. "I wanted control. I wanted you obedient. But when I saw that photo… when I saw what Emma did to you down there, it turned my stomach."
Her fingers on my stomach knotted briefly into the soft cotton of my shorts before forcing themselves to ease.
"I thought I had the strings in my hand. But I handed them to a lunatic who nearly put you in the emergency room." She met my eyes dead-on, stripped of the dominatrix's protective mask. "I don't want to destroy you. Do you understand that? If you break, if all that's left of you is a piece of frightened meat, then… then the game is over. Then I become the exact kind of filth I've spent my entire life despising."
A shiver tracked down my spine. The raw candor tightened like a fist in my throat. There was no trap here, no false floor. She was lying beside me at the end of her rope, eaten alive by the fear of her own extremes.
"I'm not your possession, Loona," I pressed out, but the words lost all momentum halfway through. The gratitude welling inside smothered the lie before it could take hold.
A quiet, dry scoff left her throat. A flicker of her old smile surfaced—tired, but razor-sharp.
"Aren't you? Then get up. Go across the hall to your room. Put your jeans on and tell me tomorrow morning that you're a free man. Go on."
I didn't move. My heels stayed planted in the mattress, my gaze anchored to her lips. She registered the paralysis, saw the burning compliance in my eyes, and the tension along her jaw slowly melted away.
"See?" she breathed. Her hand smoothed reassuringly across my center, holding the fabric down where my body kept straining against every unspoken rule. "You don't even want to leave. You're terrified of what's out there. And you know perfectly well that I'm the only person who can keep you safe from it."
"Timo is coming tomorrow," I whispered hurriedly, trying to keep my head above water. "He wants to play console, he wants to see you. How is that supposed to work? I can barely move without pain, and if he notices—"
"Timo won't notice a damn thing." Her voice regained its edge, the instinct of the commander snapping back into place. "Timo is loud, blunt, and only sees what's put right in front of his face. You will laugh, you will bring him his beer, and you will play your part."
"And the cage? You said it stays off."
She held silent for an extended breath. Then her hand rose, her thumb tracing softly, almost reverently over my lower lip.
"It stays off until tomorrow afternoon. Then the wide setting with the silicone liners, before his key turns in the lock. No force. No pinching. Purely so you don't give yourself away if he bumps into you." Her gaze pinned me, cutting straight through to the marrow. "But hear me on this: you aren't wearing it for Emma. Not as a punishment. You're wearing it because it's our secret. Kept from him. Kept from Nadja. Kept from everyone."
*Our.* The word settled around my heart like molten lead.
"And if I can't manage? If I break down in front of him?"
The corner of her mouth ticked upward. The old, familiar smile—only warmer now, closer, more perilous.
"Then I catch you. Just like tonight."
Pulling the duvet higher, she slipped her arm beneath the nape of my neck, drawing my head onto her shoulder. For a moment she stayed like that, tracking the uneven rush of my pulse. Then she leaned down.
The kiss wasn't hungry. It arrived tired and deliberate all at once. Her lips found mine, pressing down firmly, lingering a heartbeat longer than any simple comfort required. Warm, dry, sealed—as if pinning down an object that might otherwise slip away. I breathed against her, not daring to part my lips, not daring to take a fraction more than she chose to give. When she pulled back, her forehead remained rested against mine. Her breathing was unsteady.
"No touching tonight," she whispered against my lips. "No relief. You aren't playing with yourself, and you won't beg for it. You will lie here and endure this ache, exactly as it is. For me."
Her fingers wove gently into the hair at the base of my skull.
"You belong to me. Even without the steel. You don't need a lock to know who owns you. Go to sleep."
I closed my eyes. The arousal burned on, pulsing hard against the waistband of the boxers. But as her breathing deepened, her frame finally softening as her head rested heavy on my shoulder, I let go.
The frustration remained. The ache remained. Yet the shelter of her weight buried everything beneath it. I was ruined—and for the first time, there was nothing else in the world I wanted to be.
