Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Izzy sits on the edge of the bed, phone held up as she angles it one way, then the other. The pink mini dress hugs her hips, and the soft lamp light catches the bare skin of her thighs against the dark sheets. She tilts her chin down, softens her eyes, and snaps a photo.

She taps the screen, studies it, and wrinkles her nose. The angle makes her look like she's trying too hard. She tries another pose—turning her shoulder to the camera, hand brushing through her hair. She checks it and sighs.

This one makes her chin look weird. She deletes it.

She shifts her weight, pulls the dress strap up where it slipped down her shoulder, and snaps a few more in quick succession. Then she scrolls through them, bottom lip caught between her teeth.

None of them feel right. Her smile looks fake in one. Her eyes look too wide in another. The light hits her face weird in the third.

She lowers the phone, staring at her own reflection in the dark screen for a moment. Her bare feet press into the mattress as she tucks them under her.

Joe is at work abroad. He probably isn't even checking his phone. And even if he were, what if he sees one of these and thinks she looks silly instead of pretty?

She hugs her knees to her chest, the dress bunching around her thighs. The phone rests face-down on the bed beside her.

Maybe she just needs to stop overthinking it. Maybe she should just send the best one and see what he says. But every time she reaches for the phone, her hand pauses.

She lets out a soft breath. She wants him to look at her and smile. She wants to be the reason he has a good rest of his shift. But right now, she's not even sure which version of her would do that.
