Among Friends
The walk to school felt like walking the steps to a scaffold. With every stride, the resin cage pressed mercilessly against my flesh, and the Apple Watch burned against my wrist like a silent, pulsing sensor wired straight into Loona’s palm. I had yielded. The humiliation before Arisa this morning still lingered deep in my bones, but the real test was waiting ahead.
When the chime for the first long break echoed down the corridors, I stepped out of the classroom with clammy hands. I didn't have to search for long. Leaning against the stone railing by the main steps—right where the most popular crowd in our year always gathered—was Emma.
To the outside world, Emma was the girl everyone adored: outgoing, radiant, disarming everyone with a bright smile nobody could ever say no to. Beside her stood Leon, arms loosely crossed. The moment Emma’s eyes locked onto me, her expression lit up instantly. She even gave me a brief, friendly wave—yet for a fraction of a second, the calculating frost she could flick on and off at will flared behind her gaze.
My stomach twisted into knots. With slumped shoulders, I trudged down the steps, feeling the plastic rub hard with every landing, and came to a halt a pace in front of them.
"Hey John! Awesome that you came by," Emma said, a light melody in her tone that sounded like pure schoolyard camaraderie to anyone passing by. She tilted her head slightly, offering a winning smile. "You're such an angel—you were heading over to the corner bistro anyway, weren't you? Could you grab us two large caramel frappuccinos and a pair of bagels? Freshly toasted would be amazing."
Swallowing dryly, I reached into my jacket on reflex and felt the edge of my phone. "Sure… should I… did you give me…"
With a quiet laugh, Emma stepped half a pace closer, resting an apparently chummy hand on my forearm as she leaned in. To Leon, it looked like conspiratorial banter, but her voice shed every ounce of warmth in a heartbeat, dropping razor-sharp: "You know damn well who's paying for this, John. Or should I shoot Loona a quick text telling her you’re already giving me trouble this morning?"
The mere mention of her name turned the blood in my veins to ice.
In the same breath, Emma spun back around to Leon, radiant once more. "John mentioned earlier that he owed me anyway since I helped him with the review sheets last week."
Leon offered an easy grin. "Well then, thanks, bro. Good looking out."
"Exactly," Emma purred, bestowing another sugary, innocent smile upon me that barely veiled the threat underneath. "Run along, John, or the bell will catch you."
I turned without a word and broke into a stride. I covered the five hundred meters to the bistro in an awkward jog, the cage slamming into my pelvis like a blunt wedge with every step. At the counter, I pulled out my phone, held it against the contactless pad, and watched with burning eyes as nearly eighteen euros drained from my allowance account. For Emma. For Leon. For my own pathetic survival.
Breathless, gripping two paper cups and a brown paper bag, I hurried back onto the schoolyard.
"Oh, perfect, you're a lifesaver!" Emma exclaimed with practiced cheer, taking the cups and passing one over to Leon. Then she reached into her bag, pulled out a clear plastic sleeve stuffed with four handwritten, messy sheets, and handed them to me with a flawlessly pleasant smile.
"Here, you said you wanted to look over my notes for the geography presentation on Wednesday," she said, loud enough for Leon to hear, her fingers pressing the pages firmly into my grip.
As Leon took a sip from his cup, Emma leaned in slightly. Her sweet perfume of roses and springtime filled my nose, but the tone of her hushed words left zero room for negotiation.
"It's only four pages, but it's a complete mess. Type it up cleanly into a formatted PDF, structure the bullet points, and have it on my desk before first period tomorrow. Loona mentioned you’d have plenty of free time today anyway. Don't let her down."
She stepped back, offering one last picture-perfect smile for the crowd, and looped her arm through Leon's. "Come on, Leon, let's head in."
The clamp of the resin cage in my groin, the cleared balance on my screen, and the papers trembling in my hands choked the air from my chest. The noose was tightening here too—in plain sight of everyone, tucked neatly behind the guise of an ordinary favor.
