The Audience

Chapter 50 by Levantin Levantin

The doorbell on Friday afternoon rang differently than it had yesterday with Nadja—more hesitant, almost nervous.

Loona, already curled up on the sofa with her legs crossed and an iced coffee in hand, didn't even glance up from her tablet. “Answer it, John. And mind your posture.”

I smoothed down my pants, feeling the familiar, dull pressure of the resin cage, and walked toward the door. A quick glance through the peephole was enough to make my stomach seize. Emma was standing on the other side.

In the past, before Loona’s arrival, Emma had been the uncontested center of my world—the untouchable school beauty with the aloof stare whom I had spent months pining after, while she punished me with haughty disregard. But that childish crush had long been wiped clean, ever since Loona stepped into my life and took possession of every single inch of my mind.

I opened the door. Emma wore snug-fitting jeans, a loose silk top, and carried a sleek little designer handbag. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, and instead of notebooks, she was holding an elegantly wrapped box of artisan chocolates and a coffee-shop cup—a gesture of appeasement bordering on submissive. When her eyes met mine, a flicker of her old, snobbish schoolyard smirk sparked for a fraction of a second, only to fade instantly into an uncertain grimace.

“Hi, John…” she began quietly.

“Come inside, Emma,” Loona’s voice drifted from the living room. Not raised, not barked, but carried on a casual, effortless dominance that brooked no debate.

Emma swallowed dryly, kicked off her ankle boots in the entryway, and followed me into the living room. Loona sat there like a magistrate preparing to pass judgment on a petitioner.

“For you… just a little thank-you for meeting with me,” Emma managed, setting the chocolates cautiously onto the glass coffee table, as if terrified of scratching the surface.

Loona eyed the offering with an amused sidelong glance, offering no comment on it whatsoever. Instead, her gaze shifted to me.

John, leave us alone for a moment. Go to the kitchen, fix a snack tray with fruit and nuts, and brew us fresh espresso. When we call for you, come back.”

“Yes, Loona,” I nodded obediently and withdrew.

In the kitchen, my mind began racing. What was driving Emma here? Why was she bringing Loona gifts? It didn't fit the arrogant queen bee of our year, the girl who dismissed every boy with a snap of her fingers. I knew she had been forced to capitulate after Loona’s cold intervention—but this felt less like an apology and more like an audience.

As the espresso machine hummed and I arranged grapes and cheese on a wooden board, I strained my ears. Muffled voices drifted down the hall, isolated fragments that sent a tremor straight through my chest:

“…hope you’ve realized how fast something like that blows up in your face…” Loona’s cool, measured voice cut cleanly through the quiet.

“…yes, of course. It was stupid… I really wanted to…” Emma stammered, carrying a humility I had never heard from her before.

“…your remorse doesn't interest me, Emma. Discipline interests me… those who stay loyal reap the rewards… keeping the reins tight… at your school as well…”

“…I can do that. I’ll show you that you can count on me…”

A soft chuckle from Loona sliced through the air: “…good. But he belongs to me, never forget that. You can use him so he learns where he belongs…”

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. *The reins? Use him?* Under the sheer strain, my flesh surged forward on instinct, colliding hard and sharp against the walls of the resin cage. A dull ache ripped through my lower abdomen.

John! We’re ready!” Loona called out in a lilting voice.

Gripping the prepared tray with both hands, I drew a steadying breath and walked back into the living room, keeping my eyes cast down.

The atmosphere had shifted completely. Emma was leaning back on the couch now, no longer a huddled wreck, but sitting upright with her legs crossed. Yet her look was no longer uncertain—she radiated a toxic, newly restored arrogance.

“About time,” Emma snapped condescendingly as I approached with the tray. She raked her eyes over me from head to toe, a cruel smile twitching across her lips. “Took you long enough, John. One could almost think you were stalling on purpose.”

Holding the platter out, I moved to set it down on the table, but Emma raised a commanding hand.

“Hold on, don't be lazy. Don't just dump it there,” she demanded in a sharp tone, glancing briefly at Loona, almost like an eager pet looking to impress its master. “Down on your knees. If you’re serving us, you do it properly.”

My eyes flicked toward Loona in a desperate, silent plea. But my stepsister merely leaned back into the cushions, took a slow sip of her iced coffee, and met my gaze with a warm, thoroughly entertained smirk. Her subtle, barely perceptible nod struck me like a gavel: *obey.*

The resin cage pressed mercilessly into my flesh as I lowered myself slowly onto the rug before the two girls, resting the tray at their feet while kneeling before them.

Emma of all people—the girl for whom I would have surrendered everything only months ago—now looked down at me with unvarnished spite, fully validated and guided by the woman who owned me down to the marrow.
