Intermission: The Final Polls
There was a place at the edge of the island where even the crickets kept their distance. Maybe it was the volcanic rock—black, sharp, pitted by centuries of wind and salt—or maybe it was the way the spur jutted over the waves, a hundred feet straight down to foaming breakers, so that anyone walking it could see every possible escape route except up.
It was midnight, dead midnight, and the dark was so complete that the Resort’s lights—glimmering a mile inland—looked like they belonged to a world not quite connected to this one. But at the very tip of the spur, a fire was burning. Not a modest campfire, but something closer to a bonfire in miniature: orange heat curling above a careful stack of branches, smoke slanting east, sparks winking out over the water.
Arabella stepped out of the shadows and into the firelight as if it were a stage cue. Not a hair out of place, emerald gown catching the flames like bottled sunlight, posture so upright you could use her as a baseline. Her lipstick matched the red in the fire. Her smile was precise, but if one looked very, very closely, there was a single moment—half a breath, barely visible—where she seemed to steady herself.
Then the smile was on, for real this time, and she addressed the air. “Good evening, viewers across the multiverse,” she said, and her voice could have been pitched for a late-night talk show, or a live emergency broadcast, or maybe both. “If you’re just joining us—and truly, what a night to join—you’re watching the episodes beginning the season and series finale of Harem Hotel: The HH, and I’m your host, Arabella. I’ll be your guide through the final days of mayhem, romance, and spectacle, as always.”
She stepped closer to the fire, let its light catch her cheekbones, and regarded the unseen audience with a professional calm that had been honed, you sensed, over a thousand repetitions. “Before we get into the business of outcomes,” she said, “I want to thank you, the voting public, for your unwavering participation. This is your story as much as ours, and tonight, your input is not just welcomed—it’s absolutely necessary.”
She fanned a hand, as if inviting the entire night to listen in. “As you all know, the Best Girl poll has been running since the First Round, and tonight marks the last and most decisive round.” She let the words hang there a beat, the wind off the ocean flattening the smoke so it twined out and away like a signal. “For those who’ve just tuned in, or need a reminder—our thirteen remarkable contestants, each with their own transformations, their own heartbreaks, their own spectacular approaches to the Harem, are now in the final sprint. Together with their own dedication to our beloved Master, it’s your votes, your opinions, your absolutely wild commentary that will also decide who takes the Wish. The poll is live, and it’s not too late to swing the outcome.”
A gust off the breakers caught the edge of her gown, and for a second, Arabella looked almost ethereal, the color flaring against the night. She turned, profile to the flames, as if to let the light burn a clear line between what came before and what came next.
“Because, you see,” she continued, and this time there was a shimmer in her tone—something new, not quite scripted. “As we approach the endgame, we’re opening a second round of voting: The Best Arc poll. Now, I can already hear the objections from certain corners of the void, but please, stay with me—this isn’t your standard popularity contest. This is about story, growth, heartbreak, and healing. Which contestant’s journey, from start to now, hit you in the chest the hardest? Who evolved, surprised, delighted you, or devastated you the most, from the moment you first met her?”
She let her eyes flicker up, as if meeting the gaze of a million invisible viewers. “The results of this one? They matter. Not just to the players, but to the fate of the entire narrative. As a special twist, the Best Arc poll will award actual Victory Points—yes, you heard right—which means the final rankings could change, right down to the finish line. Polls close September 2.”
She smiled, not the brittle Host smile but something nearer to delighted mischief. “If that wasn’t enough, we have a third set of stakes. All the real-world dates are now complete. The final judgments are upon us. It’s time to cast your votes in the following categories, focusing on the real-world dates our Contestants took the Master on, this round: Most Personal Date, Most Emotional Date, and Best Overall Date.”
She drew a breath, and for the first time in a thousand nights, there was a ghost of nerves in the set of her jaw. “Most Personal Date,” she said, drawing the phrase out as if savoring it. “Which date was most uniquely tailored to the woman in question? Which date revealed new facets, opened up the Master to something nobody else could have done, or showed a woman’s true colors? You decide.”
She pivoted, letting the hem of her gown sweep the cinders, and addressed the other side of the night. “Most Emotional Date. This one’s simple—did it break you? Did you laugh? Did you ugly-cry? Did you scream at the screen and threaten to throw your phone into a nearby body of water? You know who you are. This is the poll for you.”
She snapped her fingers, a tiny spark catching the air, and her eyes gleamed with a challenge. “And finally, Best Overall Date. Which was the best experience, the one you wish you’d been on, or, dare I say, the one that made you believe again? You may only vote in each category once, but your choices will help decide the best-of-the-best in this most competitive season.”
She paused, the wind falling dead for an instant, so that only the hissing of the fire filled the silence. “And finally, to celebrate those without whom our Andy and our ladies would have been lost, let us not forget to pick the Best Support! No points for this one, but bragging rights and the confidence of having earned the audience's love.” Then she leaned into the camera that wasn’t there. “You have until September 2, and this time, every single vote can make or break a storyline. Let’s keep it fair, let’s keep it passionate, and please—keep it civil. Or, at least, entertaining.”
For a long moment, Arabella let herself stand in the hush, as if waiting for the invisible audience to react—maybe to send her a sign, maybe to let her know that all this really mattered.
After a heartbeat, she continued, more softly. “I want to thank everyone who’s sent in questions for the AMA. We’ve seen them, every one. And I know what you’re thinking: Yes, things are a little tense right now. Yes, there are feelings on the table that could reset the entire universe if handled the wrong way. That’s why the contestants and our dear Master will be answering your questions not as themselves right now, but as their versions as of this morning. Consider it a safe snapshot in time—one last look at everyone before the hammer dropped.”
She let the firelight catch her face again, and it wasn’t just the Host talking now. “Thank you for being the kind of audience that keeps watching, even when it hurts. Thank you for making all of this count for something bigger than the sum of its parts. Your love—your judgment, your tears, your memes—have kept us alive out here on the farthest edge.”
She brought her hands together, not in applause but in gratitude, and bowed her head just a fraction.
Then she smiled, the Host smile, full wattage this time. “Voting is open. This story will end soon. Until then, enjoy the show.”
She let the flames fill the next silence, standing at the end of the world in a dress no sane person would ever wear on a midnight cliff, and if anyone was watching closely, they might have seen the tiniest shimmer at the edge of her eyes, quickly caught and banished by the next gust of wind.
Out past the point, the breakers kept breaking, indifferent as always, and the resort lights flickered on the horizon, promising just enough hope to keep anyone from turning back.
