The crocodile
The stench of Gotham's sewers carried the weight of an ancient decay—a dense mixture of methane, oxidized iron, and the rancid odor of organic matter rotting under the residual heat of the surface. The dark water lapped at the tactical boots of Sasha Bordeaux and Rachel, advancing in a silence broken only by the rhythmic, obsessive dripping of the concrete ceiling.
Sasha had once been the embodiment of coldness and military efficiency. Today, however, she inhabited a different state of being. Beneath the sleeve of her black suit, Michael’s mark pulsed with a soft, violet rhythm, radiating waves of heat that kept her blood warm and her focus razor-sharp, shielding her from the toxic environment. She was now the manifestation of an earthly deity’s will.

A few steps away, Rachel moved with the fluid precision of an acrobat. The escrima sticks in her hands projected a neon blue light that tore through the dimness, while her eyes scanned every crack in the damp bricks.
"The trail ends here, Sasha," Rachel murmured, pointing the luminous tip at a thick mass of dark green goo and torn scales floating in a stagnant puddle. "She's close. And from the marks on the concrete, the Crocodile is much larger than the reports said."
Sasha showed no urgency. Her connection to Michael gave her absolute certainty: nothing in that subterranean labyrinth could harm her without proper permission.
"She's not a target, Rachel. She's an asset," Sasha replied, with a gentleness that disarmed the previous rigidity in her voice. "The Crocodile's brute strength is wasted hunting underground. Under Michael's command, she will be transformed into the perfect guard dog for the new empire."
"The Crocodile's brute strength is wasted hunting underground. Under Michael's command, she will be transformed into the perfect guard dog for the new empire." A guttural growl ripped through the air, vibrating directly against both their bones. The sound didn't echo from the bottom of the tunnel, but plummeted from above.
A deafening roar shattered the concrete ceiling in a shower of debris and dust. A colossal mass of olive-green scales and jaws armed with dagger-sharp teeth collapsed into the water. The Crocodile was an avalanche of muscle and primal instinct, with bloodshot yellow eyes and thick drool dripping from jaws capable of twisting steel.

Any Gotham vigilante would have recoiled before such ferocity, but Rachel's reflexes prevailed. In an acrobatic and agile leap, she spun in the air, delivering a precise blow, like a fencing strike, directly to the side of the beast's snout. The impact echoed like a hammer blow hitting solid rock.
The creature didn't even move. With terrifying speed for its size, it delivered a sideways blow that hurled Rachel against the brick wall with the impact of a head-on collision.
"Nightwing!" Sasha exclaimed, but her feet remained firmly planted on the ground.
She stepped forward, positioning herself directly in the beast's path. The Crocodile opened its jaws, ready to crush the agent, but stopped in mid-air. The beast's instinct faltered. Sasha's scent was no longer that of human prey; it exuded the unmistakable frequency of absolute power, Michael's energetic signature.
Sasha smiled, raising her scarred wrist. A pulse of violet energy erupted from its skin, expanding through the tunnel like an invisible thermal shockwave.
The beast let out a cry that oscillated between agony and torpor. Michael's mark, transmitted by Sasha, was etched like a decree into the creature's primal mind, crushing its savage will under the weight of uncompromising authority. “Kneel, beast,” Sasha commanded. Her voice contained no scream, only the undeniable gravity of one speaking in the name of a god.
Terrified and, at the same time, fascinated, the Crocodile yielded. The monumental body collapsed slowly, its scaly head touching the dirty sewer water in an involuntary gesture of total surrender.
Sasha looked at the subdued beast and then at Rachel, who was trying to catch her breath, leaning against the rubble, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“See? Brute force is irrelevant in the face of true Order,” Sasha said, calmly walking to touch the creature’s head. “Come on, Croco. Master Michael is waiting for us.”
The ancient threat of Gotham, now transformed into a devoted servant, crawled ahead to cut its way through the depths, while Rachel followed silently, feeling the world she knew crumble to give way to a new reality.
