Who does?

Cargo Ship

Chapter 11 by JackSimth

You've lost vount of how many times you'd pleaded to the void of the radio when it finally cackles back a response, "Hello, this is the Southern Express, please repeat?"

'Oh thank goodness,' you think to yourself as you reply, "I'm marooned on an island... I don't know exactly how long I've been out here. Food, water, and shelter are covered, but I desperately want to get back to civilization."

"Well, if we can find you we can drop you off as a castaway at our next port; basic humam responsibility out here, also maritime law," the radio cackles back, "what can you tell me about your location?"

"Ah, not much? I can walk atound the island in about an hour, so it's less than a mile across. The radio I'm using is vintage World War II wreckage from a Japanese plane, so the range can't be great. I've been staying in some rich dude's apparently abandoned bungalow." The guy certainly isn't coming back with the threat of a gray goo scenario that eats brains, anyway... "There's a dock? Umm... I don't have coordinates or anything useful."

"That's a fair amount, actually. Hold a bit while we check the charts..." the radio goes silent, and you're glued to the spot for an excruciatingly long time, listening intently to static.

After what is probably just five minutes, but feels like an eternity, the radio crackles to life, "okay, yeah, this should be a breeze. There's an island about that size relatively near our current position, and that's the only land mass for about two hundred nautical miles in any direction, so it has to be you. We'll send a lifeboat as a ferry when we're closer. Looks like we'll be at the dock in an hour or two. We have shipping deadlines to make, and can't linger, so be ready to go as soon as we arrive. How many are we picking up?"

"Just me."

"Meet you at the dock."

"Thank you. Thank you."

"Happy to help. Now: Be at the dock."

You rush out of the room, grab the 'go bag' you prepared for just such an event (all the jewelry you could find and a bottle of whisky from 1842 in a big cloth bag), wrap yourself in a bathrobe, and go wait at the dock...
