The Discovery
The archive room was colder than the rest of the settlement. Snow pressed against the small windows in thick white drifts, muting the world outside. A single oil lamp threw long shadows across the shelves of carefully preserved books and the new stack of water-damaged files Jennifer’s team had brought back.
Emma sat at the heavy wooden table with Jenna beside her. The younger woman’s dark hair was tied back, her focus sharp as she carefully turned the brittle pages. Most of the documents were nearly illegible — ink bled by moisture and ice, pages stuck together. They worked in silence for nearly an hour, sorting what could still be read.
Then Jenna stopped.
“Emma. Look at this.”
She slid a partially intact sheet across the table. The heading was faded but still clear enough: Secondary Containment & Suppressant Trials – Site B.
Emma leaned in. Coordinates were written in the margin, along with a short series of notes:
Experimental compound showed temporary inhibition of viral aggression in controlled subjects.
Site B maintained colder storage conditions — samples may remain viable.
Further testing required. Primary lab compromised.
Jenna’s finger traced the coordinates. “These aren’t the same ones Jennifer gave the council. This is further inland. Deeper.”
Emma read the notes again, slower this time. Her pulse quickened.
A suppressant.
Not a cure.
But something that could slow the virus… or control the worst of its effects.
She sat back, the weight of it settling over her like the snow outside.
Everything shifted in that moment.
The infertility news that had broken her only days earlier suddenly looked different. The years of breeding nights, the quiet frustration, the feeling of having already been written out of the island’s future — all of it rearranged itself around this single damaged page. If the suppressant was real, then the risk of leaving the island was no longer just a way to escape a life that had closed around her. It was a chance to change something that actually mattered.
Jenna watched her carefully. “If we bring this to the council… they’ll have to take it seriously.”
Emma stared at the faded coordinates for a long moment. The frustration that had exploded in the medical hut was still there, cold and sharp, but now it had direction.
“Yes,” she said quietly. “They will.”
She looked up, eyes harder than they had been in years.
“And I’m going to be the one who goes.”
Outside, the snow continued to fall, covering the island in silence. Inside the archive, everything had already changed.
