Broke and Beautiful

Chapter 6 by Fotzenglotz Fotzenglotz

Walter—or rather, the blonde woman who spoke with his gravelly, authoritative baritone—offered a nonchalant shrug that sent a ripple of golden hair over her shoulders. She gestured vaguely toward a small, handheld device resting on the tiny room's desk.

"The device is called the iBod," Walter said, the voice jarringly at odds with the feminine visage. "It rearranges subatomic particles to match a previously scanned-in morphological blueprint. It’s not just about looks, Tim. It’s about total molecular reconfiguration."

Tim stared, his mouth slightly agape. The sheer brilliance of the machine was undeniable, but as he looked around his cramped, dim dorm room, a cold realization began to settle in his gut. "And how much did it cost you?"

Walter’s expression shifted, a momentary flicker of shadow crossing her beautiful features before she regained her composure. "The prototype phase was... expensive," she admitted, her voice softening just a fraction.

"Expensive? Dad, you didn't just 'spend' all our money, didn't you!?" Tim stood up, pacing the small square of floor space between his bed and the desk. "We aren't just 'low on funds.' We are functionally bankrupt. Even your college fund is sitting inside that little gadget!"

The silence that followed was heavy. The hum of the iBod seemed to grow louder, a mocking reminder of the wealth it had consumed.

"It’s an investment," Walter insisted, though even she sounded as if she were trying to convince herself. "Once we perfect the stability—once we can use this for medical applications or industrial manufacturing—we won't just be rich. We'll own the concept of value itself."

"We can't eat 'the concept of value' for dinner, Dad!" Tim snapped, gesturing wildly at her nakedness and the makeshift setup in the dorm room. "You’re sitting in a college student's room because you couldn't afford to keep a roof over your own head! You spent every cent we had on a machine that turns you into a different person. You didn't even leave enough for a plane ticket back home!"

Walter—the woman—looked down at her hands, flexing the slender fingers as if checking their structural integrity. She looked less like a billionaire inventor and more like a high-end specter of a life they used to lead.

"The physics were too beautiful to ignore," she whispered, her masculine voice cracking slightly with a hint of the man who had once been able to provide everything. "Every time I got close to a breakthrough, there was one more component needed. A rare isotope here, a stabilized graviton field there... it's an expensive science, Tim."

"It’s a hungry science," Tim corrected grimly. He looked at the device—the beautiful, terrifying piece of technology that had cost them their stability, their home, and their future. "You didn't just invent something new, Dad. You invented a way to turn our entire lives into nothing but a pile of high-tech scrap."

She looked up at him, her blue eyes piercingly clear. "So," she said, trying to reclaim the old, stubborn Walter bravado. "Now that you know what it can do... How do we monetize this? How do we turn this into a revenue stream?"

Tim slumped back into his chair, staring at the ceiling. He was a college student with zero dollars in his bank account, living in a cramped dorm, and his father was currently a beautiful woman who had single-handedly emptied their family's life savings for the sake of "science."

"Just don't turn into a man again before we figure out how to pay rent," Tim muttered.
