The Trial of Joe Chill

Chapter 23 by Perversidade3

Joe Chill didn't know who the "Court of Owls" was, and honestly, he didn't care. To Joe, life was simple: you took what wasn't yours, and if the victim screamed too much, you silenced them with an iron pipe or a quick gunshot—until that fateful moment when a masked woman grabbed him. A single blow plunged him into darkness, and when he awoke in the dark, it wasn't the ordinary darkness of Gotham's alleys. There was no smell of trash, smoke, or foul rain. The air smelled of ancient marble, centuries-old dust, and cold chemical mixtures.

And, above all, it smelled of his own sweat—the product of sheer terror.

Joe was chained by the knees in the center of a massive circular hall. His pulse hammered in his throat—so hard he felt he might suffocate. When he tried to move, the clanking of chains echoed through the void, followed immediately by a whisper coming from every direction at once:

"The Court of Owls watches all... sees all..."

Joe was in a room that resembled a courtroom. From the raised tiers surrounding the chamber, dozens of figures dressed in impeccable attire and wearing blank, white owl masks looked down. No faces, no visible eyes—only black voids fixed upon him.

"Please..." Joe's voice faltered, scraping against his dry throat. "I don't know! I'm just a low-rent thief! I only rob whoever shows up in Crime Alley! I swear to God, I don't even know how I can make it up to you... please!"

A figure at the top of the central tier stepped forward. The silence that followed was heavier than any physical blow. "You took Martha Wayne's life for pocket change and trinkets, Joe Chill. You thought she was merely a wealthy aristocrat with fear in her eyes. But the blood you spilled on the cobblestones belonged to one of our ancient bloodlines. Blood that was not yours to shed—you, a mere rat."

The Sentence

Joe swallowed hard, glancing desperately around for an escape route. But the only thing he saw, emerging from the shadows behind the Court’s leader, was a tall silhouette in a white suit, razor-sharp blades glinting in its hands. A Talon. An immortal assassin of the Court.

"No... wait! I can pay! I'll do whatever you want!" Joe cried, tears finally streaming down a face etched with grime and terror.

The Court's leader merely tilted his head slightly to the side, impassive.

"The Court of Owls does not want your money, Joe. The Court demands the restoration of order. And you are nothing more than a broken cog, destined to be discarded into oblivion."

The metallic sound of claws unsheathing echoed through the cold chamber. Joe Chill—who had spent his entire life sowing fear in the darkness of Gotham—finally discovered what truly lurked in the depths of that night. Perched atop the ventilation ducts was a woman clad in a skintight, all-black ninja-acrobat suit, accented by a neon-blue, wing-shaped line stretching from shoulder to shoulder and complemented by a stylized black mask. It was a simple, streamlined suit designed for agility; after witnessing the scene, she slipped away unseen.
