Wander the estate

Chapter 6 by Northener Northener

The hunting party had scarcely disappeared beyond the estate gates before the sounds of everyday life resumed at Kingsmere Hall.

Servants hurried back indoors.

Stable lads returned to their duties.

Within minutes, it was as though the morning's grand departure had never happened.

You remained where you were for a moment, watching the last of the riders vanish into the distance.

Sir Edward had suggested you make yourself useful.

A sensible recommendation.

Instead, your eyes wandered towards the rolling parkland stretching beyond the formal gardens.

You had seen remarkably little of Lord Ashcombe's estate since your arrival.

Surely an hour spent exploring could do no harm.

Keeping to the gravel paths at first, you made your way away from the house.

The carefully manicured gardens gradually gave way to open lawns, quiet groves of ancient oak and winding footpaths that seemed to invite exploration.

The further you walked, the quieter the estate became.

Gone were the voices of guests and servants.

Only birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves disturbed the stillness.

It was difficult not to admire the scale of the Ashcombe estate.

Gentle hills rolled away towards distant woodland.

A narrow stream wound lazily through the park before disappearing beneath an old stone bridge.

Even from here, Kingsmere Hall dominated the landscape, its tall windows glinting in the morning sun.

You found yourself wondering how many generations had walked these same paths.

How many stories had unfolded beneath these ancient trees.

The estate possessed a curious quality.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Yet strangely secretive.

Several narrow paths disappeared into parts of the grounds you had yet to explore.

One led towards dense woodland.

Another followed the edge of a small ornamental lake.

A third vanished between towering hedgerows towards a secluded corner of the estate.

Your curiosity urged you onwards.

After all, opportunities like this were rare.

Sir Edward would likely have preferred you to remain close at hand or assist the household.

Instead, you had chosen to satisfy your own curiosity.

Whether that proved wise remained to be seen.

With one final glance back towards Kingsmere Hall, you continued deeper into the estate, unaware that the quiet morning walk would lead you towards discoveries few visitors were ever meant to make.
