Wizard Origin

Chapter 31 by brancorvo brancorvo

Now everybody knows vampires exist in real life, thanks to their “disclosure”. Laws and habits are being reshaped to accommodate the new reality. However, I have know vampires exist since I was 12, that being 14 years ago. That was when I was offered and accepted a contract to observe the supernatural layers of life on Earth and describe them from the perspective of a human.

Not to vampires, but to older beings, from beyond our Universe. They have means to collect objective knowledge about our world, in greater detain than we could ever dream. And they have their informants among the vampires. They also keep people like me. “Wizards”, we like to call ourselves.

Most vampires do not know we exist, and we are granted tools to remain invisible to the vampires. While we observe them, from distance. We and our homes, and closest relatives, get immunity. We are not prey for vampire hunt, their mind tricks do not work on us.

We are humans, aside that. We age, and we die after the time normal for humans. Some interdimensional tools are placed at our disposal.

Not too much, so we don’t lose the human perspective that is the reason why we are wanted.

All things considered, is a good job. Not as good as the job of those messengers who travel between galaxies and universes in daily bases. They get eternal youth and far more information about what this existence is really about. Still, the job of Wizard is considerably better than life in almost complete ignorance, as a potential meal for any vampire passing by.

There is the small chance of being promoted to the position of Messenger, and most of us live for that hope. I just like to be paid to look into other people’s lives and gossip about what I see.

Sometimes, very rarely, we even manage to help some people, in very small scale.

I was helped that way.

A noble vampire, some 40 thousand years old, named Viola, currently going by the name Victoria. She had being in a long sleep for 120 years. During that time, her family lost their last stronghold and ended wiped out from the face of Earth. For all practical purposes.

Her options, once she realized that, where clear. She could adjust to existence as a lowlife vamp. See how long she would endure being marked to destruction by all noble vampires.

Alternatively, she could offer herself as a vassal to one of the remaining families. Place her fate at their mercy and hope for the better.

Instead, she decided to go for the third option. Suicide. There was many ways she could have done that, lots of vampire hunters would love to help her. She decided not to lose any time looking for them.

Instead, she caught the first person she saw in the street that night. Who happened to be 12 years old me, going back home from hours studding Math in the house of a friend.

Lassie took me to the nearest empty apartment. Explained to me how to cut her heath from her chest intact. About the same process to do the same with a human hearth, by the way. She was controlling my mind, all seemed very normal and reasonable. Nothing to worry about, was what I had to do.

The lassie could have mentioned that I should place the organ on a fridge, or throw in sunlight. She didn’t bothered to mention this detail.

She just told me to expose the hearth to direct sunlight.

What I did, holding the organ in my right hand. Naturally, as things are, the vampire heart exploded into very hot flames. The instant sunlight touched it.

I lost the hand, the arm, and got serious burns in half my body. Barely survived.

Her body was found, seemingly human. With signs of my handwork all over and around it. The knife I had used was there too.

In the hospital, recovering, I was informed of my condition of suspect of murder. Mere formality, by this point, since was too obvious given the evidence that I was indeed the murder.

Noble Vampires realized what had happened immediately, of course. However, they didn’t saw any reason to step in and rescue me. Why would them? I had nothing to offer them.

Fortunately for me, some wizards decided to intervene, and presented my case. Suggesting that I could became one of them. If given the chance to try.

The training was harsh, but nothing half as bad as end up in prison, missing one arm and with half the body disfigured by scars.

As far as human and vampire authorities are concerned I died from unexpected complications during my first week in prison. Have been working for the Creators ever since. There are few wizards on Earth, we are far less numerous than the vampires. And we stay in contact with each other.

I am used to the casual indifference the average vampire shows for human suffering. The blind and obsessive hate the average human vampire hunter shows towards any vampire. Noble or lowlife. The game of cat and mouse between nobles and lowlifes. Now, there is this new dynamic between human authorities and vampiric authorities. Official channels, predictable sequences of lies to cover the simplest obvious truth.

There is no deal between vampires and humans, really. Vampires will take what they want and humans are powerless to stop them, or do anything to limit their actions.

Vampires will not take human governs, or human freedoms, or any more resources from humans. Because they do not want to take any of that. They never had any desire to. They need humans free and proud of their freedom, unable to actually do much to defend themselves, but able to believe the illusion that they are far more self-sufficient and far less vulnerable than they actually are.

Every side is doing their part, I am doing mine.

All things considered, my life is not half as bad as it could have been. Same is true about most lives, practically all lives, if I am not mistaken. Most people choose to not realize it, but then, to be fair, most people never saw themselves looking at a dead end as dark as the one I had the privilege to face.

Lady Viola had her eternity ahead her, immense personal power. She still decided to choose self-destruction instead of humiliation. Now, she is gone for good. I, human and ephemeral as I am, I am still here. Still alive, still able to look ahead and hope for a chance to live forever.

Preferable, as something that does not burn into flames in contact with sunlight.

I may very well choose suicide myself, one day. However, if I make that choice, I am sure of one thing. Will not be to prevent humiliation and avoid a decline in social status.
