The Orcans

Chapter 4 by Drakoval Drakoval

As seafarers, the Orcans named themselves after one of the more dominant and intelligent species native to the new planet they have chosen to call their home. Soon after their arrival, they learned that many invaders had also come to the new planet from Mars. These people were uninterested in adapting to a new environment and finding a place amongst the other sentient inhabitants. The Martians had always been about conquest and that was a fact that lead to vast destruction within the planetary system in times past.

The Orcans primarily desired tranquility, and intended to commit affront to no one. They were, however, a people who loved trade and the whole idea of learning from others as others could learn from them. This meant that they would risk much to communicate with other peoples, provided they were NOT affiliated with the Martians that had so much come to be despised. It was not easy for the Orcans, because their loves of trade and privacy were often in conflict with each other, but they made it work by never dealing with more than one or two groups at a time and moving on frequently. They were developing a fairly regular circuit though, so that friendly people came to expect return visits, over time learning to trade as easily in knowledge, trust and friendship as they did in the wares on display.

The Orcans had learned of people known as humans, original inhabitants of the planet and quite legitimately considering the land to be theirs, who were willing to talk with newcomers that believed in cohabitation as the preferred means of living together, rather than conquest. Making contact with such people is why they set ashore and sought people out. This was the important task. Finding food and fresh water was easy by comparison and was not the prime objective. These humans had retained a fair amount of science and technology from the outset of the great plague's devastation, but with each generation more technology failed and more knowledge was lost. The Orcans saw it as an essential goal to learn what the humans could teach before it was lost and to teach what they could to aid those who came to be considered as friends. Much of what they found were medieval style settlements or tribal groups, though pockets of greater scientific knowledge still remained.
