Chapter 227 by Nehal Nehal

Enjoy the sunrise...

Watching Sunrise with the Boys

The tension from the fight completely melts away, replaced by the heavy, warm embrace of exhaustion and the slow-burning buzz of the weed. The smoke curls up into the cool morning air, catching the first golden-orange glints of the sunrise.

For a few minutes, nobody says a word. The only sounds are the rhythmic flick of Daniel's Zippo closing, the occasional crackle of a cherry burning down, and the distant, peaceful chirping of early morning birds waking up across the campus below.

Ben stretches his legs out, leaning his head back against the gritty concrete lip of the roof, his knuckles scraped and bruised but his face totally at peace. Lukas sits cross-legged, a satisfied, a smirk on his face as he looks out over the school grounds like a king surveying his kingdom before handing over the crown. Daniel just looks tired, but the quiet, content kind of tired. The kind you only get when you've survived something with people you trust.

As the sun finally breaks over the horizon, flooding the rooftop in a brilliant, blinding warmth, you feel the tight knot of anxiety about the future loosen just a little bit. Whatever comes after the summer, whether you follow them or take your own path, this view, the smell of the morning air, and the three idiots sitting next to you aren't going anywhere.

"To freedom," Daniel says quietly, raising his joint slightly like a toast.

Lukas clinks his against Daniel's in mid-air. "To the best damn year of our lives."

Ben doesn't say anything, just offers a lazy, smoke-filled grin. You take one last, deep drag, letting the smoke sit in your lungs for a second before exhaling it into the dawn, ready for whatever happens next.

What's next?
