What's next?
Try to stop the robbery bank
The three of them floated back to Cody's house, their spectral trails painting the night air in streaks of purple, green, and orange. The thrill of their first successful team-up still buzzed between them. They slipped back through the wall of Cody's room, solidifying into their human bodies with a shared, exhilarated gasp.
"Dude," Cody said, collapsing onto his bed and grabbing his phone. "We need to do that again. Like, now."
"Agreed," Hailey said, pacing the room with a restless energy. "But Mr. Henderson was a test drive. I want to go for a joyride."
Aaron leaned against the doorframe, a thoughtful look on his face. "What if we could do more than just mess with people? What if we could... I don't know, do something actually useful?"
Cody and Hailey stopped and stared at him.
"Useful?" Cody asked, like the word was foreign. "Aaron, we can literally become ghosts and take over people's bodies. The only 'useful' thing to do with that is to see if the head cheerleader really does dye her hair."
"No, I'm serious," Aaron insisted, pushing off the door. "Think about it. We heard that report on the TV the other night, about that bank robbery? What if we could have stopped that? We could possess the robbers, make them hand themselves over. No one gets hurt."
Hailey's brow furrowed. "So... like, superheroes? That's a little lame, Aaron. Plus, dangerous. What if they have guns?"
"We're ghosts, Hailey. Bullets can't hit us," Aaron countered, his voice growing more confident. "We'd be untouchable. We could be the heroes this city actually needs."
Cody snorted. "The 'Purple Phantom' and his sidekicks, 'Green Goblin' and 'Orange... uh... Crush'? Sounds like a bad Saturday morning cartoon."
Before Aaron could retort, the TV, which they'd left on, suddenly blared with a breaking news alert. A harried-looking reporter stood in front of the downtown First National Bank, police lights flashing behind her.
"We're coming to you live with a developing situation," the reporter said, her voice tight with urgency. "The First National Bank on 5th street is currently under siege by at least two armed suspects. Police have the building surrounded, but the robbers have taken hostages. We can confirm that one of the hostages is Hank Pembrook, a recent high school graduate. The situation is volatile, and police are urging all residents to stay away from the area."
Aaron's eyes widened. Hank. He knew him—a quiet, massive guy who always seemed to be carrying a stack of books thicker than his arm. He was one of the few people at school whose moral compass was even straighter than Aaron's.
"That's it," Aaron said, his voice dropping to a low, determined tone. He looked at his friends, his blue eyes burning with an intensity they'd never seen before. "We're going."
Cody and Hailey exchanged a look. This was no longer about pranks. This was real.
"You're insane," Cody whispered, but there was a flicker of excitement in his eyes.
"Maybe," Aaron said, a grim smile on his face. "But are you going to let me go have all the fun?"
Without another word, they dissolved into their respective colors and shot through the wall, streaking across the rooftops towards the flashing lights downtown. They arrived at the scene in minutes, hovering invisibly above the police barricades. The chaos below was a tapestry of screaming sirens, nervous officers, and a terrified crowd huddled behind the tape.
"Okay, new plan," Aaron's voice echoed in their minds. "We can't just bust in there. We need to be smart. I'll go in first, scout the situation. You two stay up here, on overwatch. If I get into trouble, you'll be my backup."
"Be careful, Aaron," Hailey's voice was tight with concern.
"Always am," he lied.
Aaron floated down, a wisp of purple smoke, and slipped through the bulletproof glass of the bank's front door. The scene inside was tense. A dozen people were huddled on the floor, their hands on their heads. Among them was the huge frame of Hank, looking more angry than scared. Standing over them were two figures in black ski masks, guns trained on the crowd.
But it was the third figure that caught Aaron's attention. She was standing by the vault door, not wearing a mask. She was tall, athletic, with dark hair pulled back in a severe ponytail. She moved with a liquid grace that was both beautiful and terrifying, her eyes scanning the room with cold, professional precision. This wasn't some random thug. This was something else entirely.
"Time's up!" one of the masked men shouted. "Get the vault open, now!"
The woman didn't even flinch. "Patience," she said, her voice smooth as silk. "We're on a schedule."
Aaron knew he had to act. He couldn't possess the gunmen; they were too twitchy, too likely to accidentally pull a trigger. But the woman... she was the one in charge. If he could take her out, the whole operation would fall apart.
He darted forward, a purple blur, and plunged into her body.
The world shifted violently. He wasn't in a nerdy kid's body or a tired teacher's. He was in a finely-tuned machine. He could feel the coiled strength in her limbs, the muscle memory of a thousand combat moves. He knew, without knowing how, that he could take down both gunmen before they could even blink.
"Everything's under control," he heard himself say, her voice a perfect tool of command. He took a step towards the huddled hostages, intending to disarm the men.
But as he moved, he felt a strange resistance. A pressure building in his mind. It was her. Her will was fighting back, a wall of pure, focused discipline that his own consciousness slammed against. He'd never felt anything like it. He was trying to steer a speeding train, and she was the one with her hand on the throttle.
