Chapter 24

Is she, though?
Seems so
Today Alice takes me with her to work. I borrow her trick with the wings and use my own Many Forms instance to get a ‘cloak’... and because they have muscles, I also get to use them as a brassier (which is good, as the child carrier doesn't work well with wings). As a bonus, I get any design I want, and can swap it at will.
Thankfully, Alice keeps me away from people, walking me in the back door, setting me in an interrogation room, and bringing me a cell phone in an evidence bag, plus a laptop that's not. “All right… we got this from a perp. We have a warrant to search his things for evidence…” she presents the paper, “...but can't actually afford our normal technician, and really don't want to wait the two week turnaround: This is a **** case. What can you get me?”
A modern cell phone is basically a Starfinder Personal comm unit, which is a tier zero computer…. “Pretty much anything it has. Give me a minute…” the Toolkit spell for hacking tools, Borrowed Power for Display of Charisma, Divine Power, Mythic Surge, Display of Charisma and the Computers skill (which I migrated to Charisma instead of Intelligence)… “What would you like?”
“Location history, call history, contacts, conversations, photos, browsing history…” she starts listing things off, and I copy it all to her laptop.
She pauses, “Wait, you're done already?”
“Yes,” and she's in the know, so… “skill optimization, and the actual steps are abstracted. By using the game mechanics rather than actually doing the work of dumpster diving for passwords, digging through source code for exploits, checking Russian forums for compromised logins, disassembling hardware for direct memory access, dealing with encrypted data, and whatnot… I have full access just for trying.”
She nods slowly, “And what's the limit?”
With my check? “I need some way to access it, whether that's physical access like here or electronic access across the internet. With either, I can crack a computer for as high as the DC goes.”
“So if you wanted to crack a bank…” she considers.
“Then it doesn't matter if they have any actual exploitable security vulnerabilities. If they have an online web portal or whatever, I can get into it.” Hmm. SO TEMPTING.
“Let's not do that, then,” Alice blinks at me. “Let's see….” she goes over the photos - which, yes, includes the picture sent with the ransom note… but this one isn't a printout, and has the location data in the metadata.
“Got him. Thank you. Now to rescue the lady let's see….” Alice pulls up Moogle Maps and takes a look at the address.
I look as well, “Give me an hour to meditate and I can pick up Fey Invisibility; Share Link as well. That'd let me slip in while invisible and get the victim out from under their noses.” Mythic rocks, specifically the 3rd level Recuperation ability. An hour in meditation, one of my unlimited uses of Mythic power, and I've essentially rested for a full night… which lets Well of Miracles replace all of my Spheres talents known. I have six of those; I'll want one for Warp, one for Destruction, and then it's just the Fallen Fey sphere itself, plus Share Link, Fey Invisibility, and the required Fade. With that setup, I can make anyone invisible for eight minutes or until they do something to break the invisibility (which, admittedly, is very easy to do).
Alice pauses for a long time, thinking, before responding, “I can hide that you used what's effectively magic to hack a cell phone, no problem: That's a thing people can do with the proper tools and training: I put your name down on a form, and everyone who digs thinks you're a self-trained white hat hacker: No problem.” She takes a breath, “if you walk in and grab Vanessa out from under the noses of a couple thugs, using magic to make you both invisible… someone is going to talk. Maybe the thugs, maybe Vanessa, maybe someone on the ****, maybe a newsman with a lucky angle with a video camera… but someone will. No getting around it.” She takes another breath, “Don't get me wrong: I like the idea. A **** like this could easily go sideways and turn bloody at the drop of a hat. I prefer the odds of you doing it to us doing things traditionally. But it would cost you: People would know someone with proper invisibility exists.”
I consider that, “I can change this body's skin tone, eye color, hair color, voice, and face… “but I am stuck in a hypersexualized fetish wet dream of a body regardless, “...so I can dress up as a superhero as a decoy. Have people hunting for a woman that doesn't exist.”
Alice considers, and nods slowly, “That could work. There'd still be a hunt, but if they're looking for the wrong person… okay.” I get the distinct impression that's not all that's on her mind. “Okay. Let's do this. You said you needed an hour?”
I nod.
“I'll have everything else in order by then. See you soon…” Alice leaves me alone to meditate.
