With sympathy

"Sounds rough," said Duke. "Honestly. I can't imagine being on a team."

"But don't you get lonely?" Emerald asked.

"No," said Duke. "I'm fine on my own. Nobody bosses me around. Nobody to apologize for."

"Sounds nice," said Emerald, not noticing Duke was getting closer to her. Or, if she did, she didn't care.

"You ever thought of switching teams?" Duke asked.

Emerald laughed. "Sometimes. But honestly, I can't imagine anyone else as my teammates. They're annoying, but I love 'em."

Duke was in prime position to hypnotize her. But he was also genuinely enjoying their conversation.
