Chapter 12

What's next?
The Beach House
By the time you finally pull off the highway and into the small coastal town, the sun is high enough to warm everything in soft golden light.
The exhaustion from waking up so early still lingers a little, but it’s harder to care now. The closer you get to the beach house, the more excited Jane becomes in the passenger seat beside you.
“Oh my god,” she says for what feels like the fifth time in ten minutes while looking out the window. “This place is so cute already.”
Small beach shops line the streets around you while palm trees sway gently in the ocean breeze. Everything feels slower here somehow. Calmer.
You glance over at her and smile.
“You’re getting really excited.”
“I am really excited,” Jane says immediately. “I’ve been needing this.”
You follow the GPS through a quieter neighborhood closer to the shoreline until finally turning down a narrow street lined with beach houses.
Then you see it.
The house sits slightly above the others near the end of the road, bright white with large windows reflecting sunlight off the ocean behind it. A wooden balcony wraps around part of the second floor, and even from the driveway you can already see the water stretching endlessly in the distance.
For a second, neither of you says anything.
Then Jane grabs your arm suddenly.
“Wait,” she says excitedly. “That’s ours?”
You laugh softly.
“Pretty sure.”
“No way.”
You barely get the car into park before she’s already unbuckling herself.
“Oh my god,” Jane says while climbing out of the car. “It’s literally perfect.”
You follow her up the small front walkway while she practically bounces beside you with excitement. The ocean breeze hits stronger now, carrying the smell of saltwater through the air while waves crash faintly somewhere nearby.
The second you unlock the front door, Jane immediately slips past you inside.
And then she freezes.
“Oh my god.”
The inside somehow looks even better than the listing photos.
Massive windows along the back wall flood the living room with sunlight, giving a perfect view of the ocean just beyond the balcony outside. The interior feels warm and cozy without being cramped — soft neutral colors, a huge couch, woven blankets draped over chairs, and light wood floors that glow in the sunlight.
The entire place smells faintly like ocean air and clean linen.
You step inside behind her, setting the bags down near the door while Jane slowly turns in a circle taking everything in.
“This is insane,” she says breathlessly.
You grin.
“Good insane?”
“Very good insane,” she says quickly before suddenly pointing toward the windows. “Look at the view!”
She hurries toward the back of the house while you follow more slowly, laughing under your breath at how excited she looks.
The closer you get to the windows, the better the view becomes.
Blue water stretches endlessly beyond the sand below while sunlight sparkles across the waves. A few people walk along the shoreline in the distance, tiny against the massive ocean backdrop.
Jane presses both hands dramatically against the glass.
“We’re literally right here,” she says excitedly. “Like actually right here.”
You step up behind her, resting your hands lightly against her waist.
“Told you it’d be worth the drive.”
She leans back against you automatically while still staring out at the water.
“You did good,” Jane says softly.
Then suddenly her energy spikes again.
“Wait,” she says quickly while slipping away from you. “I need to see the bedroom.”
Before you can answer, she’s already jogging down the hallway.
You shake your head, laughing while following after her.
“You’re so cute.”
“I’m thorough,” she calls back.
You find her standing in the middle of the bedroom a few seconds later with the exact same amazed expression on her face.
The room is just as cozy as the rest of the house. Huge windows overlook the water from the side wall, sunlight pouring across a massive bed layered with white blankets and soft pillows. A sliding glass door near the corner leads directly onto the balcony outside.
Jane immediately drops backward onto the mattress dramatically.
“Oh yeah,” she sighs while spreading her arms out across the bed. “This is dangerous.”
You laugh and set one of the bags down near the dresser.
“What makes it dangerous?”
She grins up at you.
“I may never leave this bed.”
“It cant be that good.”
A second later, she suddenly scoots toward one side of the mattress and pats it possessively.
“This side’s mine,” she announces.
You raise an eyebrow.
“You’re claiming sides already?”
“Yes,” Jane says confidently. “I’m establishing territory early.”
“You’re insane.”
“You love it.”
Unfortunately, she’s right.
You start unpacking clothes from your bag while she continues lounging dramatically across the bed like she owns the place.
A few seconds later, you glance over and catch her staring at you.
“What?” you ask.
Jane smiles lazily while resting her chin against her hand.
“Nothing,” she says innocently.
“That’s suspicious.”
“I’m just appreciating the view,” she teases.
You laugh softly.
“You’ve seen me unpack before.”
“Yeah,” she says casually. “But now you’re unpacking at the beach.”
“That changes things?”
“Mhm.”
You shake your head while smiling to yourself.
A few minutes later, she finally gets up to unpack too, though she spends more time distracting you than actually helping.
At one point, she walks behind you and wraps both arms around your waist while you’re hanging clothes up.
“You’re clingy today,” you tease.
“I’m always clingy,” Jane replies against your shoulder.
“That’s true.”
She hums happily before kissing your cheek softly and finally stepping away to unzip her own bag.
The balcony doors are cracked slightly open now, enough for ocean air to drift through the room. But after a few minutes, Jane suddenly walks over and slides them fully open.
Immediately, the sound of the ocean fills the room.
Waves crash rhythmically against the shore below while warm sea air flows through the curtains, carrying the scent of saltwater inside.
For a moment, both of you go quiet.
Jane steps out onto the balcony first, resting her hands against the wooden railing while staring out at the water below.
You walk out beside her a second later.
The view somehow looks even prettier from outside.
Sunlight dances across the ocean while the breeze moves gently through Jane’s hair. She closes her eyes for a second, breathing everything in like she’s trying to physically absorb the moment.
“This is exactly what I needed,” she says quietly.
You rest one arm around her waist while standing beside her.
“Me too.”
She leans comfortably into your side afterward, both of you just standing there together while waves roll endlessly onto the shore below.
Eventually, Jane tilts her head up toward you with a slow smile.
“So,” she says casually, “how fast is too fast to immediately go lay on the beach for the next six hours?”
You laugh.
“I was wondering how long it’d take before you said that.”
“About thirty seconds,” she admits.
Then her eyes narrow slightly while looking you up and down.
“You know,” she says teasingly, “I brought a new bikini I bought.”
“Oh really?”
“Mhm.”
She smiles innocently.
“You’ll see it soon enough.”
Before you can respond, she kisses you quickly and slips away toward the bedroom again.
“I’m getting changed,” Jane calls back over her shoulder. “Try not to miss me too much.”
You lean against the balcony railing smiling to yourself while you hear drawers opening inside the room. This weekend is already turning out better than either of you expected.
