What's next?
Five More Minutes
The next morning comes way too fast.
At exactly 5:00 AM, the quiet room is suddenly interrupted by the sound of Jane’s alarm going off beside the bed.
She groans immediately, blindly reaching toward the nightstand while still half asleep.
“Ugh,” Jane mumbles tiredly as she finally grabs her phone and silences the alarm. “Already?”
You let out a sleepy sigh beside her, barely wanting to open your eyes yet either. The room is still dark except for the faint blue light creeping through the curtains, and the warmth underneath the blankets makes getting up feel physically impossible.
“It’s early,” you admit, your voice rough from sleep. “But we gotta get moving if we wanna make it to the beach house in time for check-in.”
Jane slowly pushes herself upright in bed, stretching her arms over her head while yawning dramatically. The oversized hoodie she slept in rides up slightly as she moves, exposing a glimpse of soft skin along her stomach before she pulls it back down again.
“I cannot believe we’re voluntarily awake at five in the morning,” she complains sleepily.
You smile and pull the blanket tighter around yourself.
“We could always cuddle a little longer.”
That earns a soft laugh out of her.
Tempted for a second, Jane glances back toward the warm bed before shaking her head and swinging her legs over the side.
“If we don’t get up now,” she says while standing and reaching for the pair of shorts she tossed onto the floor the night before, “we’re literally never leaving.”
“That’s probably true,” you admit while watching her move around the room. “But I still want a few more minutes in bed with you.”
Her expression softens slightly at that, though the determined look quickly returns.
“Nope,” Jane says firmly while pulling the shorts on underneath the oversized hoodie. “The earlier we leave, the sooner we’re relaxing on the beach.”
You grin mischievously from underneath the blankets.
“Make me.”
She immediately laughs before grabbing one of the pillows and tossing it directly at your face.
“Get up, lazy bones!”
“Oh, it’s on.”
You throw the blankets off dramatically and jump out of bed, immediately chasing after her.
Jane squeals loudly and takes off running toward the bathroom, laughing uncontrollably while trying to dodge around the doorway.
“You’re gonna make us late!” she yells between laughs.
“You started this!”
She turns around just long enough to stick her tongue out at you before disappearing into the bathroom while you follow close behind.
The second you reach her, she laughs harder when you wrap your arms loosely around her waist from behind.
“Okay, okay,” Jane giggles while trying to pry your hands away. “Truce.”
“You attacked me with a pillow.”
“You deserved it.”
You rest your chin against her shoulder while both of you stare sleepily into the bathroom mirror.
Her hair is completely messy from sleep, strands falling everywhere around her face while the oversized hoodie nearly swallows her whole. Even half awake at five in the morning, she somehow still looks beautiful.
You press a soft kiss against her cheek.
“You’re cute when you’re sleepy.”
She smiles immediately despite trying to stay stubborn.
“You say that like you weren’t just threatening **** five seconds ago.”
“I can multitask.”
Jane laughs quietly before turning around in your arms and resting both hands against your chest.
“We seriously need to start getting ready,” she says softly. “As much as I’d love to stay here all morning.”
You sigh dramatically.
“Responsibility ruins everything.”
“It really does.”
Still, neither of you moves for another few seconds.
The bathroom light glows softly around both of you while the apartment stays completely silent otherwise. It feels strangely peaceful standing there together this early in the morning, still half asleep with the entire weekend stretched out ahead of you.
Eventually, Jane reaches up and gently smooths your messy hair back with her fingers.
“You excited?” she asks quietly.
You nod.
“Yeah,” you admit honestly. “I think this trip’s gonna be really good for us.”
Her smile softens instantly.
“Me too.”
Then, almost immediately, the teasing look returns to her eyes again.
“But first,” she says while stepping away from you, “coffee. Or I’m gonna die.”
“That’s fair.”
The next thirty minutes pass in sleepy chaos.
You brush your teeth side by side while Jane leans dramatically against the counter like she’s barely surviving consciousness. At one point she nearly puts her toothbrush down in the wrong drawer and blames it on “early morning brain damage.”
Then comes packing the last few things.
Phone chargers.
Toiletries.
Snacks she insisted you needed.
By the time you finish zipping up the final bag, the room already feels lighter somehow. Excitement slowly replaces exhaustion while the reality of finally leaving together starts sinking in.
Jane grabs her tote bag from the kitchen counter before pausing near the front door.
“Wait,” she says suddenly.
“What?”
She walks back over toward you without answering and wraps her arms around your waist again, hugging you tightly for a second.
“What was that for?” you ask softly.
She shrugs against your chest.
“I’m happy,” Jane admits quietly. “That’s all.”
You smile and kiss the top of her head.
“I’m happy too.”
A second later, she pulls back with another grin.
“Okay,” she says while grabbing the keys off the counter. “Now let’s go before I fall asleep standing up.”
You laugh softly and reach for the luggage while she opens the apartment door, cool early morning air immediately spilling inside.
And together, the two of you finally head out toward the car and the beginning of your weekend away.
