What's next?
Prelude to chaos (Part 2).
So yeah, plenty to do. No time to workout, apparently, and while I didn’t like to break the routine, especially in the middle of adjusting to a new one, this was a special occasion.
Some of us took a shower while others did the dishes, and while they took a shower we began to sweep the floors and move things to the backyard. I… didn’t think there would be that much dust, but the house was big, so even after a few days there was quite a bit. I suppose we’d have to make cleaning a weekly thing.
“Check that there’s nothing inappropriate in the upper floors, either,” Alice said. “Mila’s and Sarah’s siblings are coming.”
“We don’t have anything inappropriate, do we?” Noelle asked. “We don’t even have… toys.”
“And speaking of toys, I kind of want to have a couple,” Mila said. “You know… to try it out?”
“I never dared to get vibrator at home, but now…” Sarah began to ponder it seriously.
Alice sighed. “Love, is the… super secret room properly locked?”
Ah, that one. “Yeah, you can’t even open it by accident. You really have to know how to do it. It’ll be fine.”
“Still, be careful,” Sarah said. “Cole will want to check the music room.”
“Right.”
“Mila, I swear I’m not being mean or just fucking with you, but have you made your bed?” Grace asked her. “Your mom’s 100% gonna go check.”
“Um… Be back in a moment!” Mila left her broom against the wall and ran upstairs. Cake and Red must’ve thought it was a game because they rushed after her, you know, before coming back down when there was no game to play. And speaking of…
“Cake, don’t!” Noelle tried to scold the cat, yet she couldn’t stop laughing as Cake kept chasing a ball of fluff she was sweeping. “I’m gonna end up sweeping you!”
“Do it,” I told Noelle.
“What?”
“Do it. Sweep her.”
“Um…” The wooden floor was fairly smooth, so while Cake was laying on the floor, Noelle sent her sliding along the floor with the broom. Cake stood up, looked around with her ears up and ran to Noelle for another go.
“Wait, she likes it?” Alice asked, laughing.
“Yeah…”
Diana came back down, being the last one to take a shower. “Want me to clean the first floor bathrooms?” she offered.
“Please,” I accepted. “Can someone help her out?”
“I will,” Sarah said, giving her broom to Grace.
I heard my phone buzzing not long after. Mom was calling to tell me they were outside, so I opened the gate for them. They parked next to Diana’s car, and as they got out, they looked up at the house, trying to take it all in.
“Why do you even need three floors?” Isabelle asked, eyes on the balcony on the second floor. “You’d live in a one-room apartment no problem.”
“Yes, but I’m not alone, am I? That said, I admit this might be too much…” I told her.
“It won’t be when you have six kids running around. Ah, wait, isn’t it seven now?” Mom said with a straight face while I felt my entire world spin.
“Um… Isn’t it too soon to be thinking about that?” I asked her.
“Oh, sure, but you had this place built to stay here, didn’t you?”
I sighed. “I guess I did.”
“Come on, give us the tour!” Isabelle said, grinning. “We haven’t seen the finished house, after all.”
“Ah, right. Well, come on in.”
“Wait, let me get Mint and Chip!” Isabelle said, going back to the car.
It felt a little strange to be welcoming my family into my own house. The good kind of strange, though. I could feel at least a bit proud of myself knowing that I was becoming more independent, and mom was proud of that, too.
“Oh, by the way, mom. Call Cake, please,” I told her as we went into the house.
“Hm? Alright. Cake! Pspspsp.”
Not a second later, a white and orange missile came shooting out of the living room and into mom’s arms with a long jump.
“Woah there! Hahaha!” Mom held Cake in her arms as the cat purred loudly and rubbed her head against her face.
“She was crying in front of the TV last night,” I told her. “She missed you.”
Mom’s eyes went wide open and her jaw dropped. “No, she didn’t.”
“She did, Mrs. Brooks,” Alice said, coming over with Grace to greet her. “She was in the living room screaming from like 11:00 pm until Oliver and Diana arrived with Red, Diana’s dog. That managed to distract her, but she was definitely sad.”
“Oh, my girl… I’m so sorry.” Mom continued patting Cake until Isabelle came into the house with the two huskies, Mint and Chip, who… had grown a fair bit already. Maybe it seemed like that because I hadn’t seen them in a while, but they were the size of three shoes now instead of just two.
Cake saw them and meowed in what I interpreted as a very relatable ‘Oh, come on!’ Then Red came to check on what was going on, he saw a couple of puppies and got all excited. Just my family and chaos was already starting…
The girls greeted Isabelle and mom before I gave them a quick house tour because we still had stuff to do. It was 11:30 am, so while we weren’t in a hurry, it was best not to dawdle.
And you know, I AM proud that, while mom came here early to make sure we didn’t mess anything up, she ended up just helping us do what we were already doing. She realized that she didn’t need to tell us what to do or anything of the sort.
“I guess I have to apologize,” she told us all. “I didn’t give you enough credit, it seems.”
“Well, our own families are coming over, too,” Alice said, smiling wryly. “The last thing we want to do is give them more cause to worry.”
“That’s true,” mom said with a chuckle.
But when she turned around, Alice looked at me and I could tell there was more to it than that. Sure, we didn’t want to make our families worry… but Alice also didn’t want to give her parents more ammo to criticize her choices.
