The First Thaw
Elsa was trembling, vibrating against my grip like a plucked cello string. Up close, she was flawed in the most beautiful way. Her skin was porcelain-perfect, but pale to the point of translucence. There were dark circles under her eyes, years of nights spent pacing in fear. Her dress, woven from ice magic, felt brittle and cold against my burning palms.
"You don't understand," she gasped, her eyes darting between my face and my hands, waiting for frostbite to turn my skin black. "Please. I can't control it. If you stay this close, I'll freeze your heart."
"My heart is a star, Elsa," I murmured, leaning closer until I **** her head back against the ice door. "You couldn't freeze it if you tried."
I released one of her wrists. She didn't run. She didn't attack. She flinched, bringing her hand up to her chest, curling her fingers as if holding invisible snowflakes. She was paralyzed by the proximity. For years, her mantra had been conceal, don't feel. She had avoided touch like a plague. Now, a man made of fire was pressing her against a wall, invading her personal space with an arrogance that shattered her worldview.
I raised my hand. I touched her soft, pale cheek. She sucked in a sharp, terrified breath. My thumb brushed her cheekbone. The heat transfer was instant. Her skin was freezing, like touching dry ice, but under my fingers, it immediately began to soften. A flush of pink bloomed under my touch, spreading across her pale face like ink in water.
"See?" I whispered. "You're not a monster. You're just... cold."
I slid my hand down her neck. Her pulse was hammering against my palm - thump-thump-thump -rapid and panicked. "And you're tight," I noted, my voice dropping an octave. "So incredibly tight. Holding it all in."
Elsa’s eyes fluttered. The sensation of heat on her neck was overwhelming her senses. It was a sensory overload after a lifetime of numbness. Her knees buckled, and she slid down the door a few inches, forcing me to step in closer to pin her upright. My thigh slotted between hers, the heavy fabric of my coat pressing against the slit in her ice dress.
"What are you doing?" she breathed, her voice barely a whisper.
"I'm checking the temperature."
I looked down at Anna and Kristoff. Kristoff was staring up, mouth agape, witnessing the impossible. Anna was watching with a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide. She saw her sister, the untouchable, distant Queen, trapped against the ice-glass. She saw the way Elsa’s head was tipped back, exposing her throat. She saw the steam rising from where our bodies met. And deep down, Anna remembered the feeling of being in that cocoon. She knew exactly what Elsa was feeling.
I turned my attention back to the Queen. "Open your mouth, Elsa."
She blinked, confused and dazed. "What?"
"You need to breathe. You're hyperventilating. Open your mouth."
She parted her lips, a small, hesitant gap. I didn't wait. I crushed my mouth against hers.
It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was a collision of elements. Elsa stiffened, a muffled cry of shock vibrating in her throat. Her hands flew up to push me away, palms pressing against my chest. But the moment she touched me, she didn't push. She gripped. The heat radiating from my chest was a lifeline. Her freezing palms soaked it up. I thrust my tongue into her mouth. She tasted like winter air and peppermint, crisp, clean, and utterly cold. My tongue was a brand of fire, invading her sanctuary. I swept through her mouth, heating the roof of her palate, tangling with her shy, frozen tongue.
Hiss. Steam curled from our joined lips. Elsa’s resistance shattered. She let out a whimper, her fingers curling into the fabric of my coat, pulling me closer. She had been starving for warmth her entire life, and now she was drowning in it.
The castle reacted to her surrender. The jagged, amber spikes on the walls smoothed out. The purple light shifted to a soft, pulsing blue, then to a warmer, rosy hue. The floor beneath us became slick with water as the permafrost began to sweat.
I broke the kiss, pulling back just an inch. A string of saliva connected our lips, freezing in the air before melting again from the heat of my breath. Elsa’s eyes were blown wide, her pupils dilated. Her lips were swollen and red, the blue tint gone. She panted heavily, staring at me as if I were a god.
"You..." she slurred, her composure ruined. "You tasted... hot."
"I told you," I growled, grabbing her waist and pulling her hips flush against mine. "I'm the solution."
I looked past her, through the icy glass doors of the balcony. The storm outside was still raging, but inside, the air was growing humid. "We're done talking in the hallway," I announced.
I swept Elsa up into my arms. She gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms around my neck, her ice-heels dangling. She was light, fragile as a snowflake. I turned to the audience below.
"Anna," I called down. My voice echoed through the great hall. "Wait here. The Queen and I have to... negotiate the terms of her surrender."
"Negotiate?" Kristoff muttered, looking at the steam rising from us. "Is that what they call it?"
Anna stepped forward, her face flushed. She nodded, understanding the unspoken command. "Okay," she called up, her voice shaky but trusting. "Just... bring her back. Bring her back warm."
I looked at Elsa in my arms. She buried her face in my shoulder, hiding from her sister's gaze, ashamed and aroused and confused all at once. "Don't worry," I promised. "By the time I'm done, she'll be melting."
I turned and kicked the ice doors open. I carried the Queen deeper into her own fortress, looking for the bedroom.
