Queen on the Mountain
The guardian of the bridge didn't just wake up; it erupted from the snow. Marshmallow, a towering monstrosity of jagged ice and packed powder, rose to its full height, casting a long, terrifying shadow over the narrow bridge. Its eyes glowed with a pale, blue bioluminescence, and jagged icicles formed a crown of thorns along its back. It roared, a sound like a glacier cracking in half, and slammed a massive fist onto the bridge.
Kristoff didn't hesitate. To his credit, he was brave, if foolish. "I'll distract him!" he shouted, grabbing a rock from the cliffside. "You guys run for the door!" He hurled the rock. It bounced harmlessly off the monster’s chest. Marshmallow slowly turned its massive head toward the iceman. It didn't look distracted. It looked annoyed. It exhaled a cloud of frost, growing sharp spikes along its arms.
Anna squeaked, hiding behind my coat. "Okay," she babbled, her voice climbing an octave. "That’s a big, angry snowman. Did we make him angry? I feel like the rock made him angry."
"Kristoff," I said, my voice cutting through the wind. "Stand down."
"I can take him!" Kristoff argued, raising his axe. "It's just snow!"
"But it's enchanted snow," I corrected.
I stepped forward. I didn't run. I walked calmly toward the beast. Marshmallow roared again, raising a fist the size of a boulder to crush me. I didn't dodge. I raised The Solar Zenith. I didn't swing it. I just... turned up the heat. I poured my will into the blade, causing it to flare with a blinding, white-hot intensity. The air around me rippled. Steam exploded outward in a shockwave.
The monster’s fist stopped inches from my face. It didn't hit me because it couldn't. The heat was so intense that the ice on its knuckles began to drip instantly. Water cascaded down its arm. The creature recoiled, screeching, not in pain, but in primal fear. Fire was the one thing it understood.
"Sit," I commanded.
The giant snow-golem looked at the tiny, burning figure before it. It looked at its own melting hand. It whimpered, a surprisingly pathetic sound, and sat down heavily in the snow, covering its head with its arms to shield itself from my light.
I walked past it.
"Wow," Anna breathed, peeking out from behind me. She looked at the cowering monster, then at my back. "You just... told it to sit. And it sat. Can you do that with reindeer? Because Sven is usually pretty good, but sometimes he eats the carrots before I can-"
"Anna," I said, offering her a hand. "The stairs."
She took my hand instantly, her slender fingers intertwining with mine. Her palm was still clammy, but warm from my coat. We walked onto the bridge of ice. It was breathtakingly slick, a translucent ribbon suspended over a deadly drop. Kristoff followed a few paces behind, muttering something about "lucky tricks" and checking his axe for damage.
As we ascended the staircase to the main doors, Anna’s nerves started to get the better of her. She gripped my hand tighter, her boots slipping slightly on the smooth surface. I tightened my grip, anchoring her. The heat from my boots melted shallow footprints into the ice, giving us traction.
"So," she rambled, her eyes darting around the towering spires. "Do I just... knock? I mean, she built this whole thing, so maybe she wants privacy. Or maybe she’s lonely. But the snow-monster suggests privacy..."
"She's scared, Anna," I said gently. "She built this to keep people out. To keep you out."
Anna faltered, her face falling. "She thinks she'll hurt me."
"We're going to show her she won't."
We reached the massive double doors. They were intricate, carved with snowflakes and geometric patterns. I pushed them open. They swung inward with a heavy, resonant grinding sound.
We stepped inside. If the outside was impressive, the inside was a cathedral of winter. The ceiling vaulted high above us, supported by pillars of clear ice. A chandelier made of frozen fractals hung from the center, casting a cold, purple light over the room. The temperature dropped instantly. Even with my Keyblade, the chill here was aggressive. It pressed against my heat shield, testing my strength.
"Elsa?" Anna called out, her voice echoing in the vast emptiness. "It's me! Anna!"
Silence. Then, movement at the top of the grand staircase.
Queen Elsa appeared. She was transformed. The restrictive coronation gown was gone, replaced by a shimmering dress of ice-blue silk and a cape of sheer frost. Her hair, usually tight and controlled, was loose in a long braid. She looked magnificent. She looked powerful. But her eyes... her eyes were terrified.
She stared down at us, her gaze locking onto Anna first, filled with longing, and then shifting to me. She felt the heat. She saw the golden weapon in my hand, and the way I was holding Anna’s hand. She saw the steam rising from my shoulders in her sub-zero sanctuary.
"Anna," Elsa said, her voice trembling. "You shouldn't be here."
"Elsa, please," Anna stepped forward, dragging me with her. "Don't shut me out again. We can help."
"Help?" Elsa laughed, a brittle, sharp sound. She backed away, frost spreading from her heels across the floor. "There is no help for this. I am dangerous, Anna. Go back to Arendelle. Go back to the sun."
"I brought the sun with me," Anna said, pointing at me with her free hand. "Look! He's warm, Elsa. Like, really warm. He melted the snow-monster just by looking at it!"
Elsa’s gaze snapped to me. She narrowed her eyes, sensing the threat. I wasn't just a man; I was a counter-****. I was the Fire to her Ice. "Who are you?" she demanded, raising a hand. Magic swirled around her fingers, sharp, deadly icicles forming in the air. "Get away from her. You'll hurt her."
"I'm the only one here who isn't hurting her, Your Majesty," I said calmly, stepping forward, placing myself slightly in front of Anna. The heat radiating from me intensified, pushing back the frost creeping across the floor.
"You're cold, Elsa," I stated, my voice echoing through the hall. "But I can fix that."
