Chapter 4

But as the date wound down, the moment grew heavy with unspoken questions. They stood outside the coffee shop, the evening air cool against their skin. Alexa’s gaze held his, her expression a mix of hope and uncertainty. Jervin hesitated, his hand hovering near hers, the air thick with the promise of something more.

“I had a really good time,” Alexa said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Me too,” Jervin replied, his heart pounding in his chest. He wanted to reach out, to close the distance between them, but the ghosts of his past held him back. The memory of Heather’s hurt expression flashed in his mind, and he froze, torn between the possibility of something new and the fear of repeating old mistakes.

Alexa’s hand twitched, as if she might reach for his, but she pulled back, her smile faltering. “I should probably go,” she said, her voice steady but tinged with disappointment.

“Yeah,” Jervin agreed, his voice hoarse. “I’ll… I’ll see you at work.”

They stood there a moment longer, the silence stretching between them. Alexa’s gaze searched his, her expression a mix of longing and resignation. Jervin’s heart ached as he realized how close they’d come, how easily they could have crossed that line. But the weight of his past, the fear of not being enough, held him in place.
