The kiss ended, and before Gerry could catch his breath, the sanctuary swelled with applause. The organ thundered triumphant as he and his new wife—his mother in Jackie’s body—turned to face the congregation. Her hand was clasped in his, soft and trembling, her smile painted bright across lips that moments ago had pressed so desperately to his.
The doors swung wide and together they walked down the aisle, past the rows of family and friends. Faces blurred into a haze of teary eyes, clapping hands, murmured congratulations. Their applause followed him like a tide, and though his chest tightened at the sight of Jackie’s tear-streaked face in the front pew, he **** himself to step proudly, arm-in-arm with the woman at his side.
The ushers guided the guests outside toward the reception, laughter and chatter spilling into the late afternoon light, while the wedding party lingered. A different kind of performance began.
The photographer directed them into place with brisk efficiency, ushering bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, relatives. Every pose demanded a smile, every flash immortalized the strangest masquerade of his life. He and his mother stood together for the “bride and groom” shots—her hand curled on his chest, his arm around her waist—smiling like they were made for each other. The camera didn’t care that behind her painted lashes it was Jackie’s soul looking out, nor that the real Jackie, his mother in borrowed youth, lingered at the edge of the group, dabbing her eyes and forcing brightness into her smile.
“Lean a little closer, chin down—perfect,” the photographer chirped, oblivious. Gerry obeyed, letting Katherine’s perfume—Jackie’s perfume—fill his nose as her cheek brushed his temple. For the span of each shutter click they were newlyweds, radiant and complete. And then the flash faded and he felt the hollowness return.
Jackie slipped away once or twice, retreating to the bathroom with her purse. When she returned her cheeks were freshly powdered, her eyeliner fixed, her composure intact. To the lens she was simply a proud mother, touched beyond words by her son’s happiness. No one watching suspected the depth of her grief. Gerry saw it, though. Every time her eyes rested on her own body in a wedding gown that wasn’t truly hers, the shine in them faltered.
“Now let’s get the whole family,” the photographer called, ushering Jackie into place beside her own husband, who beamed proudly at Katherine dressed as his daughter. Jackie’s hands tightened around her bouquet as if to ground herself.
Hour upon hour it stretched—smiles, poses, laughter that felt brittle in Gerry’s throat. Katherine, inside Jackie, managed to keep her head high, every gesture as graceful as ever. She knew how to play a part, and she played it flawlessly, her hand never straying far from his. Jackie faltered, but never broke.
Finally, the photographer lowered the camera with a sigh of satisfaction. “That’s it, folks. Gorgeous shots—you’re going to love them.”
Gerry and Katherine exchanged a look—relief, exhaustion, something deeper neither of them dared voice. Jackie breathed out a shaky laugh, murmured something about touching up her mascara once more.
The limousine was waiting outside, glossy black and ribboned in white. The guests were already at the reception, the clinking of glasses and hum of music faint through the church doors.
Katherine slipped her arm through his once more, her gown rustling softly as she leaned close, voice low enough only he could hear:
“Smile for them a little longer, darling. We can fall apart later.”
Her words were warm, steady—but her grip on him trembled.

PLEASE ADD CHAPTERS! Premise: You are Gerry (Gerald) Duncan, a 28 year old software developer in good physical health. Today is your wedding day - you are marrying Jackie (Jacqueline) Driscoll, a beautiful woman you've dated since college. Due to an accident with a mysterious wedding gift, Jackie switches bodies with another member of the wedding party shortly before the wedding. The three of you decide to keep the swap secret and go through with the ceremony and honeymoon, hoping to find a way to reverse the transformation later. Themes: Throughout the story the characters will have to deal with the ramifications of the swap. Can Gerry and Jackie carry on their relationship secretly, hiding the swap from everyone else. How will they handle the honeymoon? The early days of the marriage? How will the person in Jackie's body handle this? What about Gerry & Jackie's hopes to quickly have a child? One aspect of the transformation makes the victims comfortable in their new bodies, i.e. they won't go crazy at the shock of the change. I leave it up to the individual author whether or not they gain anything else from the switch (access to skills, memories, knowledge, personality traits, etc.).
