Chapter 12 by BeyondTheWallOfDream BeyondTheWallOfDream

Is it the end?

Thunder only happens when its raining

"I've lost", I think to myself. My body is cold, the sodden ground is dry compared to my checks. I feel my resolve and heat bleed out of me with each passing second. I'm no hero, no god, just a unemployed nobody who gave up on life to run into the jungle. But she was something, she was here not as an escape but a choice. And I, I brought calamity on her head. And now she's dying.

I hear two voices talking as I'm on the edge of the abyss.

"He was MY query not yours" A gruff voice yells.

"Well he was... until I also had a claim to hunt him." Another smooth voice responds.

_The conversation seems to become derailed as sky above glows bright with light. I see a grotesque dark figure growing in size at the edge of my vision. It casts shadows with its claws and fangs that dance across the ground. I am past caring though as I collapse onto my back, regardless of how terrifying the creature is, I can't leave Nadya. I hear a primal feminine scream of rage as the moon swells in the sky. _The last thing I hear before oblivion takes me is the running footsteps of two beings fleeing the scene. And then blissful nothingness.

I wake still on damp soggy ground. The hut's scorched shattered remains around me. I appear unharmed but my chest aches with the loss and fear of the nightmare. I see Nadya, curled into a circle sobbing on the ground nearby. I slowly approach her and gingerly take her into my arms. She punches my jaw on reflex then stiffens. "John, is that you?"

"It's all over now I tell her", and hold her in my arms. I quickly check her chest and am relieved to feel two large familiar breasts instead of an arrow piercing her.

"We almost die and the first thing you think about is sex she yells", her voice a bit unsteady.

"No, the first thing I think of is you... I felt like I lost you." I reply.

"No... you lost something else, and I'm so sorry. I didn't think they'd push things this far." She replies.

I look down at my body and notice nothing amiss, "I look and feel fine other than that hell we just endured" I chuckle nervously.

"Not all wounds are physical, I was careless and forgot that last night" she says with a degree of shame, "I failed as a hunter, and you've paid the price."

"Whatever the price is you are worth it. You mean the world to me." I say as I kiss her.

She gives me a look containing both happiness and a sad guilt as she melts into my embrace. The heat of the moment carrying us away from the current cold and the terror of our recent dreams.

How do they process the recent events?
