Chapter 40

Which challenge does the birthday girl choose? And what's her plan?
Mia 3: Mia has a big plan for the rest of the game... But will the girls go along with it?
“It’s not a good idea…” said Sophie as she placed the WARNING card back on the coffee table and shook her head.
Faith didn’t really register that Sophie was saying something important, or that Mia was not in the mood for a little humorous reminiscing about her previous turn, so she opened her big mouth and joked while elbowing Mia. “Wow, that’s two turns in a row where the titties say hello before you even pull a card. I’m sensing a paaattern!”
Mia ignored Sophie and gave Faith a **** stare.
“Alright, alright, no fun allowed during Negative Nancy’s turn, geez…” said Faith. Under her breath, she added, “Only Soph got to see anything anyways…”
The room sat in uncomfortable silence for a few moments, but then Lucy tried to swoop in and help Mia logic it out. She figured that the others couldn’t cheer this sourpuss up, so it couldn’t hurt for Lucy to at least try to help Mia with her turn.
“So the dog one is clearly a yoga one, you’re pretty good at that!” Lucy said nervously, “She does yoga at least once a week, but I guess you guys probably knew that…” Lucy knew Mia still wasn’t a big fan of hers, and was currently staring a hole into the side of her head, but she continued anyways. “Office chairs aren’t really your style. Hehe, you’re more of a couch potato! Err… Not like that, though. Anyways… Mitten Impossible sounds kinda fun, but it’s not really the right weather for mittens…”
“...What do you think?” Lucy asked Mia. She turned to see Mia scoff at her and pull a card.
Mia was fuming at Lucy calling her a couch potato, so she knew which card to pick, not that it really mattered with her imminent plan. The other two sucked back into the board with a SCHWOOP.
Mia held the card up and read aloud. “Office Chair Accessible. Timed Challenge. Tie yourself to an office chair and do a lap around the block within five minutes. Use clothes you are currently wearing as rope, and your arms must be restrained. You can not be propelled by anyone else. Your time starts as soon as you are secured in your seat in the driveway and ends when you return to the same spot after scooting around the block.”
Silence hung in the air as the other three’s mouths hung open at the intricate instructions.
Mia broke the silence when she said, “Welp, alright. Faith, you’re up.”
Faith looked really confused, holding up her hands and saying, “Nuh uh, it’s your challenge sister. Whaddya mean I’m up?”
“She means she’s chickening out,” said Sophie. True to Sophie’s word, Mia held out the pair of dice for Faith to take.
“Chickening out?? What? Why?” asked Faith.
Mia placed the dice in front of faith, placed her challenge card in front of the board, and held up the chicken WARNING card. Mia explained, “It’s simple. We eat the two punishments, go to the next turn real quick, and repeat. Go around the table a few times, and, bing bang boom, we’re free of this evil game in less than ten minutes.”
Faith and Lucy were on the verge of being persuaded, and had no rebuttals.
Sophie had been gathering her thoughts. After a dramatic pause, she took in a huge breath and started her lecture. “If we take those medium paths up ahead and avoid the scary dark spaces down the shorter paths, we’ve got roughly ten turns ahead of us. Even down the scary paths it’s still eight-ish turns. There’s maybe fifty percent challenge spaces. Not to mention the one fifth punishment spaces. So if we’ve got, collectively, forty turns to speed through, and twenty of those are us chickening, that’s forty punishments. Add on maybe ten more from punishment spaces, and you’re looking at dealing with the fallout of fifty punishments in the span of a few minutes.”
Mia looked like she was going to respond, but Sophie took a huge breath and continued. “So, we’re rolling, we’re pulling cards, we’re moving things along real fast. But in your hypothetical, we aren’t reading these cards, are we? That would slow things down too much. What happens if we get one like my punishment that gives someone panic attacks if blank happens? Now they’re freaking out and can’t take their turn, and we’re all frantically digging through their cards to find what’s causing it… Then our punishments are kicking in at the same time. Would we even be able to help them? Not to mention, what if the game doesn’t allow us to go for the Great Chicken Gambit? What if there’s mechanics we haven’t seen that slow things down and further compound things? Then we stop the panic attack and gather ourselves, and we’re now halfway down the board, with bordering on double digit punishments each. Do you really think we’re gonna rally at that point and regain morale to finish the game?”
Faith’s gut told her that Sophie seemed to know a suspicious amount about the game, more than she was letting on. But now wasn’t the time to confront her about that.
“Yeah, what she said!” said Faith, “Plus, you’re a big ol’ chicken if you actually chicken out right now! Stop being a wet blanket and a spoilsport and just play the freakin’ game. You just have to push yourself around in a chair anyways, it’s easy! Your tights are probably enough to tie you up, you’d be totally decent!”
Mia was looking at the ground, unable to respond to any of Sophie’s logic or Faith’s taunts.
Lucy got up from the floor, scurried into her room, and rolled her office chair into the doorway. She chimed in and said, “Look, my chair rolls around so easy breezy beautiful cover girl. Faith’s right. You can do it!”
It did seem to have decent wheels and rolling action. The only issue was who was rolling it. Mia shut down when she was getting bombarded on all sides by her two besties, but now Mia’s mortal enemy was adding to Dogpile On Mia Day as well.
Mia picked up her challenge card and flicked it between her fingers in thought as Lucy retook her place on the couch.
Does Mia chicken out?
