Chapter 13 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What will you do?

(Grill) Make Dee defend her own actions

Dee was awfully suspicious of you, but you found yourself just as suspicious about her own actions since she'd arrived on the island. It wasn't just that; her unmasked nitpicking of everything you'd done so far was just plain annoying. You had a vested interest in making her realize she was under the magnifying glass of a detective every bit as capable as she was... but you also wanted to see her squirm a bit.

You told her that several other guests had already mentioned her nosiness and strange behavior unprompted during your time here. Why was she already interrogating people before any kind of crime had taken place? It was almost as though she knew something was going to happen!

"Because I did know something was going to happen," Dee answered simply, wearing a completely neutral expression as she adjusted her tie without watching you.

You paused to let her elaborate. She paused to let you continue. When that didn't happen, she sighed impatiently and explained herself in an even tone, but you couldn't help thinking her attitude was as though she was talking to a child, not a fellow detective.

"I knew something was going to happen. That's because it's Wanda Croft. Inviting a bunch of strangers to her reclusive mansion? Of course something would happen."

Gritting your teeth, you kept pushing: she also went up to the third floor without being summoned there, breaching the etiquette of the mansion. Behaving that way wouldn't endear herself to the staff and could ultimately make it harder for her-- or even for you and the other guests-- to maneuver.

"Are you complaining that I'm not playing by the rules?" a slight smile peaked at the corners of her mouth for a moment, before fading almost imperceptibly. "I have two responses. One: the mistress of the house is now quite unconcerned with etiquette. Two: if there are rules in place here, then as detectives, we should break them at every opportunity. Doing otherwise? Just plays into the perpetrator's hands. The fact you're peeved I went up? Actually just makes you more suspicious."

Determined to get at least one leg up in the contest, you pressed her on one more odd detail: she was the only guest who'd come alone. How did she explain that? Even if she didn't have a close friend, wouldn't she naturally invite a colleague, especially if she had reasons to be suspicious of Wanda? Her solitude here made her the odd woman out.

"I like to be alone."

You blinked, then asked: that's it?

"That's it. I do my best thinking when I'm alone. In short? It's a coincidence. It's not a 'clue.'" She finished smoothing out her tie with one hand, then finally met your eyes. "Is that all?"

You cursed under your breath. You couldn't find anything good to pin her with.

"Make me your prime suspect if you want. You're mine. It'd only be fair," she finished, then gave you a small bow, as though you two hadn't been intensely antagonizing each other this whole conversation. "Goodbye for now, Malcolm Wolf." She walked off with her flat-soled shoes clapping against the hardwood of the first floor main hall, leaving you stewing in discontent about the lack of solid clues you'd managed to pull out of her.

--Another's suspicion of you has risen!--

Now what?
